I was thinking about how much weight we put on "homegrown" talent when big events roll around. Whenever there's a major tournament or a professional showcase in town, the local media goes absolutely wild about anyone who went to a nearby college or grew up in the area. It’s great for community spirit, I guess, but does it actually change the vibe of the event for the fans?

I remember back in college, everyone would lose their minds when a former local star made a big play, but once the novelty wore off, the stadium would feel pretty empty. It feels like we use local ties as a crutch to manufacture excitement for things that might otherwise just be niche interests to the general public.

Do you guys think local connections actually make you more likely to show up and support an event, or is it just something the news outlets use to grab clicks?
