I just want to say that I didn't vote for The Doors simply because the album is such a masterpiece that I’m at a loss for words—there isn't much left to say that would be particularly clever. Honestly, I’m just glad Lisa Davis46 reminded me of this record; I had a blast revisiting it, and I still get those same chills during The End. An album of this caliber really doesn't deserve a single negative comment from anyone.

Dennis Hall41 said:I see this as nothing less than a complete sellout of our core principles—just a blatant, calculated provocation designed to pivot toward that reactionary, high-society elitism...😠

I’ve been stuck on that old-school country music loop lately, just listening to those classic outlaw anthems, but I stumbled upon this the other day and it actually really hit the spot...

It’s a bit depressing when an album doesn't land the way it clearly should—it just goes to show how easily people who aren't actually familiar with the band can be swayed, simply because I used this one track to tease the release.

Lisa Davis46 said:Just saying, this was honestly perfect for me today while I was out taking photos in the morning light! I could easily listen to this early in the day, maybe with a cappuccino and a smoke (yeah, I still roll my own)... 🕺 It’s got soul.

Do you happen to know any Italian? 😁 To me, this whole thing—(especially 🤔)—sounds like a precursor to a musical, weird as that sounds, even though that style only really popped off in Italy for a hot minute before opera totally crushed it.
It’s got these short spoken bits mixed in with mostly drunken-sounding tracks. (I don't get why they can't just sing "la la la" during those Renaissance party tunes; instead, they have to throw in all that "fa, falalalala falalala" 🤷 nonsense.) Toward the end, there’s a spoken part mentioning Palestrina (that famous composer from back then)😲, and right after that, there's this slow song that feels like he's mocking him 🕺
. By the way, this guy used to compose these pieces where cats meow, dogs bark, and all sorts of animals make noise 🙏
.
Have you ever heard of Jordina Savall? Next time, we'll be diving into something from "his" catalog.

Nice, looks like all the suggestions I voted for passed. I'm definitely most excited about El Paso... honestly, thanks to whoever suggested it, I've had the album on repeat for days now! 👍

I’m actually a little bummed Primal Scream didn't make the cut. That album is fantastic, and honestly, pretty pivotal for music history. It was the moment the band pivoted hard, shifting from mid-tier indie rock into that whole house sound—likely thanks to Manijev joining the fold after The Stone Roses broke up. They used a ton of samples, but they blended them seamlessly into their core sound. I'm not saying they invented sampling, obviously, but on this record, everything just clicks. It was probably one of the first massive commercial successes built that way, serving as a blueprint for everyone following in their footsteps—not necessarily because of the specific sound, but because of the actual process of making the music. Even Daft Punk pointed to Screamadelica as the album that defined the genre.

But whatever, it’s been a heavy week with plenty of solid releases. I could probably split my votes a few more ways, but I can't account for every single thing out there. I'll try to put something together regarding Calexico later today, or tomorrow at the latest, whenever I get around to it.

No rush, it'll happen when it happens. 🙂

I'm hoping The Doors play tonight... or tomorrow at the latest. I guess I'm feeling too restless to just sit at my computer right now, and this intro is actually pretty important to me. Plus, I need to rewatch that documentary to refresh my memory, and I’ve kind of spiraled into some Nietzschean philosophy reflected in most of Morrison's lyrics.

Also, I just wanted to say that voting was incredibly hard this time around. I managed to listen to almost every album, more or less. It was tough picking just eight. I really have to highlight the last suggestion, Blake Mills and his 'Mutable set', which blew me away. It's my first time hearing him, but his music has such a specific vibe—it's like pure peace and healing in these crazy times. Just beautiful ambient electronica mixed with acoustic vibes; very minimal, not many words, but somehow warm, gentle, and soft. I really liked the review by Thomas Jurek on AllMusic:

Mutable set combines The instrumental and production prowess of 2018's nearly ambient instrumental look and The poignant songwriting sensibilities of 2014's Heigh ho, only more softly. Released during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, its songs are concerned with timely topics: The strange pace of modern life that races while seeming to stand still; individual and societal isolation, climate change, the exterior state of the world and its people, as well as Mills' interior universe.
(...)
Mills leaves his ego OFF Mutable set and serves The songs with Care, attention, and tenderness. And while this record sounds bleak on the surface, there's a strange sense of comfort in these songs; they acknowledge the sad state of the world even while attempting to transcend its darkness and uncertainty.

Anyway, thanks Kokeza for this awesome recommendation. I hope there are more coming! 🙂

I'm not sure, but some parts were easy enough to understand! 🙂 Well, a little. As a musical or even a play, it makes sense. But to me, it felt fun and cheerful; it doesn't have that heavy melodrama you get in opera. And I don't know exactly where the line is where opera emerged from various vocal musical forms like cantatas and oratorios... maybe you know?

I just wanted to take a quick second to give a shout-out to the mods for all the hard work they put into keeping this thread updated. I’m talking about that index thread, obviously, but also that very first post... that layout with the covers is honestly top-tier. 👍

Thanks, Amanda Robinson4, we're really trying here! 🙂 Honestly, the most important thing to us is just getting you guys to bite on the topic and actually want to come back here every Thursday and Friday. After a while now, it feels like we've finally gathered a solid group of people in one spot—people who aren't just showing us new music, but are actually discovering stuff themselves too. I'm just bummed that some folks have totally vanished; I hope everything is alright. Our buddy baribba hasn't been around for a while either... maybe it's just life, I guess. I don't know. 🕺

Lisa Davis46 said:I don't know, some parts were actually pretty easy to follow! 🙂 well, a little bit. If you view it like a musical or even a play, it makes sense. Personally, I found it super fun and upbeat—none of that heavy opera melodrama. And honestly, I’m not totally sure where the line is drawn between all those different vocal styles, cantatas, and oratorios, and when it actually becomes "opera"... maybe you know the deal?

This sounds pretty interesting too! 😁

Never heard of it, but lay it on me! 🙂

The first actual opera was Daphne by Jacopo Prati around 1598, but it's lost (I think there are just fragments left), and the first one we actually have is Eurydice (1600) by the same guy. From what I gather, they were obsessed with Greek mythology back then. Cantatas and oratorios came along later. Even though I listen to classical music a ton, I don't hit up operas that often. I'm not a huge fan of those super high-pitched female voices, but I try to focus on the beauty of the melody underneath it all.

Jordin Savall is one of my latest musical finds. He probably isn't even singing on these albums—maybe he plays something, like an old-school violin—but he's definitely the one running the show. It might turn into a full cycle. His work is incredibly rich since most of this stuff was recorded ages ago.🙏

It’s getting crowded in here, so I better jump in before there's no room left. 😁

Jordi Savall / la Capella Reial de Catalunya / Montserrat Figueras / Hespèrion XXI / Tembembe Ensamble Continuo-El Nuevo Mundo: Folias Criollas (2010)

That’s the full title right there. If that’s a mouthful, you could just call it Jordi Savall - el Nuevo Mundo : Folias Criollas (2010)
