Amanda Lopez50 said:Honestly, this isn't just beautiful—it’s like listening to a soundtrack for an early Denis Villeneuve film (just way more traditional, obviously)😍

Case in point: my absolute favorite from The Godfather, his best movie, hands down. 🙂
Denis Villeneuve is Armenian, of course, but he was born in Egypt and grew up in Canada.

When I put this music on, I feel like I'm totally alone at night in some massive, remote desert. 😍

It’s gorgeous, sure, but there’s this raw edge to it. It forces you to actually sit with yourself. There's nothing out there except you and the sand.

I guess my first suggestion here already made it pretty obvious, but I’ve always had a soft spot for traditional music and its various interpretations—so it shouldn't be a shock that I actually find this beautiful.
That said, I have to admit I’ve only really started digging into the politics behind all of this over the last few years: where the music actually originates, who owns the rights, and who’s actually profiting from performing it (though I’ll get into that some other time, assuming I ever get around to writing about those less-than-stellar albums by my favorite "unimportant" musician 🙂); but this Yo-Yo Ma seems like a genuinely serious artist to me—someone more interested in sonic research than just capitalizing on tradition—so I can listen to him without feeling guilty. 🙂

Edit: so, I'm listening to Hey djan right now and it is literally the Flashlight I linked above! OMG, there's an entirely new dimension to the movie I hadn't even considered! (The film touches on the diaspora and "roots" a bit, but it's far less intense than his earlier work.)

In that case, you're definitely going to dig these versions too. 👍

There are just way too many albums to get through in such a short window. Honestly, maybe we should just set a limit of ten and make it first come, first served. I won't be able to wrap my head around the last two albums before time runs out, so I'll just stick to rating these others instead. 🙂

I'm with you there... ten feels like a ceiling to me too, but at the same time, having that limit kind of adds a nice little charm to it... it makes you feel like you actually have to get your act together and suggest an album before time runs out...

Dylan’s debut, Early Frost, is just a stunning, beautiful album.
😍

Right now, I'm mostly getting pulled in by Paradise Birds. It's my first time hearing Jamie Branch, and wow!
I'm also digging Grimes and Rhye right off the bat...

Plus, signing on for Xavi—Jordi Savall is incredible. Honestly, his stuff really hit the spot for me yesterday and again this morning.

My own discovery was my, uh, last-minute album suggestion, though I won't be voting for them...

Got some great stuff to share this time around...

I've always found the Department interesting, though I haven't really done a deep dive. I got sucked into that N.W.A. phase and Jesus Built My Hotrod, even picked up an original CD. This one is pure vocals.

Some of Dylan's early work is top-tier. I never fully obsessed over him, so consider this my way of making up for it—this track is all about the voice.

First time hearing Rhye. It’s smooth. Melancholy vocals paired with minimal instrumentation? I can get behind that.

Fishmans is psychedelic, interesting, and sounds really well-structured from what I've gathered so far. It works.

Sabbathe is a total no-brainer for me. I haven't followed them closely enough yet, so I'm definitely looking forward to hearing this album.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Solid vocals.

Grimes falls into that synth-pop and dream-pop category, which usually hits the spot for me. But honestly, despite trying more than once, her style just doesn't click. I'm passing on her this time.

When it comes to folk or anything with ethnic vibes, it really depends on the specific culture and how they approach it. It's hit or miss for me, so I don't find much that fits my taste unless it's a perfect match.

I honestly don't see why we should put a cap on how many albums get suggested... especially when interest is picking up. It’s a dynamic thing—you can scale things up at any moment, though obviously, that comes with its own set of pros and cons.

It isn't like you have to sit there and listen to every single track on the list.

If you look at the suggestions, it's pretty easy to spot the rough outlines of what might actually grab your attention. You just need to zero in on those specific picks and leave the rest alone.

Jamie is a she, an amazing jazz trumpeter. And check out those shirts. 😁

Can I throw out a suggestion?
When you suggest something, try to include a sentence or two about the album itself. For those of us who are music-starved and don't recognize everything, a little context goes a long way in helping us decide whether to hit play or skip—or at least helps us vote for something that catches our eye "blindly."
It doesn't need to be a damn essay, just a quick short pitch. 🙂

It’s a nice thought in theory, but honestly, it feels pretty impractical in certain scenarios. For instance—take the band I suggested earlier this week—they dropped 18 studio albums between 1995 and 2019, plus 5 live albums, 6 compilations, 2 video releases, 14 EPs, and 18 singles. Given the sheer scale of their discography and how much their style evolved over the years, a single label doesn't really mean much anymore. Besides, we all have Google at our fingertips.😉

I messed up again, just like I did back at Vanderbilt. 😁 Wow, okay, here's another one. Honestly, it's incredible. 😛

If you're going to suggest an album, just give me a sentence or two about it first. I guess it helps. Maybe.

I'm on the same page as Xavi here. When I first started suggesting stuff on this thread, I used to go pretty deep and write out full descriptions for every album, but then I realized nobody else around here really does that. It felt like I was just exhausting myself with all the typing when apparently just dropping a link and a photo is enough for everyone else... but honestly, I still think it’s better to have a little context beforehand. Even just a few quick lines or maybe—and I think this might actually be better—a bit of a personal take on it. 🙂

There’s really no point in listening to all of that. I guess you could, if you wanted to waste your time, but honestly, why bother?

I guess I’m on the same page as analogbear40 regarding limiting the number of album suggestions. We should keep them to a minimum, just like our own list. Between Thursday and Friday, there’s way too much stuff to get through. It’s hard enough just to listen to everything or at least catch whatever actually sticks out to us. 🙂
