All-Time Draft 8: Official Thread

First off, good grief, you lot.

The waiting game is finally over. It was meant to be ☕

Lately, our gaps between releases have been stretching out. This one took its sweet time, too. The new leadership decided to shake things up with some updates—modernizing the format to cater to newer generations with shorter attention spans who find the classic draft a bit too tedious.

I assume everyone is more or less familiar with the fundamentals of drafting, building rosters, and setting lineups. If anyone is still feeling lost, they can do so right
here.

Everything I mentioned in the pre-draft post still stands.

What has changed is that for this edition, we’re playing in anonymous mode. How does that work?

It’s pretty straightforward: every participant will be assigned an alias, and their draft results will be posted under that name in the official thread.

Contestants should send their proposals to me via private message using their actual usernames. You can still use your real handles in the chatter thread to debate criteria, player picks, or team builds.

A little discretion is advised here. Another twist to the anonymity is that any player can try to guess which forum member is hiding behind a specific alias. If you guess correctly, you get to take a player of your choice as a reward (provided they aren't protected, which we'll discuss later). If you guess wrong, you lose one player to the contestant you failed to unmask.

Example:

-Contestant 2 thinks the user 'GamerOS99' is actually Team 6. If they're wrong, Team 6 gets to take one player from Contestant 2 as compensation.

You can avoid losing your star picks by earning "raid repellent", a prize available during the competition for successfully completing rounds. It protects one player for the entire season. We'll also have other rewards for top-tier play.

All "call-outs" and transfers through admins must happen via PM; nothing is to be done publicly. Only the resulting transactions will be posted in the official thread. Feel free to drop hints in the chat about who might be who.

Everyone gets three attempts at the "guess who" game. Because of this, there are no roster size restrictions, though every manager must have a minimum of 12 players.

One more thing: there won't be any fluff in the presentations. We'll stick to a generic format: formation, a brief summary of player quality, and tactical ideas—all kept to a single sentence. But we'll get to that when the time comes.

Most importantly, do not mention unbanned players in the chat thread. (I'd put an exclamation point there if I had one on my keyboard. 😉)

Since February is always a bit chaotic, and with the season feeling even more unpredictable than usual, we will be playing under aliases. You can choose from the following list of legendary NFL coaches:

You cannot request a specific coach, nor will we match players to coaches based on personality traits—that would just make everyone too easy to identify. The point of these pseudonyms isn't to be the center of attention, but to facilitate anonymous drafting. Everyone will receive an alias via private message, chosen at random, which you will use for the game.

The first round begins Wednesday.

Good grief, give me strength.

Let's dive into the first criterion. As I mentioned before—and as per tradition—we’ll start with something relatively straightforward. I want to keep the initial digging to a minimum so new players can grasp the concept without a headache.

The goal is simple:

Select a player who earned at least one cap for a national team that no longer exists, or for a nation that isn't currently recognized by FIFA, or perhaps wasn't recognized by FIFA at the time they actually took the field.

To ensure your pick is validated, you'll need to send the following via private message within the deadline:

1) A link to a Wikipedia biography for the player.

or

A match report in English that confirms the validity of your selection.

The participant who garners the most upvotes for their choice (following the standard rule of one vote per forum member) will win a prize: once during the competition, specifically in the third (final) round, they will have the right to see everyone else's picks before submitting their own.

The deadline is Friday, February 18th, at 11:59 PM.

Consider the games officially open.

It looks like I failed to clarify one thing when setting the criteria: I don't view modern Germany as some brand-new nation or even a direct successor to West Germany, but rather as the result of a massive rebranding effort.

After the absolute chaos of the last round, we’ve actually seen much better progress in this new phase.

Five candidates have until tomorrow at 2:00 PM to save themselves from the ungrateful fate of being stuck dragging the weight of the group since the very first round.

So, I'll leave them with a single quote to keep them humble before the final showdown. Nothing is ever truly lost; it's always darkest before the dawn. 😉



As for everyone else, just know that the new criteria are ready. A little hint: the spotlight is finally being turned toward those smaller soccer nations. As for what that means exactly? That will be revealed tomorrow.

If Mark Stevens doesn't submit his peak during the next two rounds (1.3 and 2.1), he’ll be disqualified.

Should that happen, you’re all welcome to reach out via DM with suggestions for a replacement. I'll keep whoever you propose strictly confidential until the competition wraps up.

I'd also suggest we stick to this principle if possible: instead of just banning a player's peaks when they get disqualified, we let a new contestant take over their roster. They can try to make the best of what's there—under a fresh alias, of course.

Since Stanko made it clear there’s no point in waiting on him, I’m posting the results now. My afternoon is officially mine.

Try to make your picks count. The player who manages to rack up the most aces wins a "Ask the Boss" joker. That allows them to ask me once during the third round whether their peak will clear or get blocked.

rowdybison4 is picking sheepish Blaz Sliskovic—he sent me the suggestion via DM. Jonathan Johnson2 is going with Roy Ferench. Then we have the usual suspects, Stanko Mrsic.

rowdybison4 is looking for someone who played for Great Britain, while Jonathan Johnson2 and Paul Nguyen are hunting for players from the old US National Team era.

The new criteria is:

Find a player who scored against representatives from small nations like Luxembourg, Malta, Iceland, Andorra, or Cyprus in the Champions League or European Cup since its inception, or in the UEFA Cup or Europa League from 1995 onwards.

For a pick to be valid, you must:
- Provide a link to the match including the scorers list.

A quick note for the newcomers: these players are now officially out of the competition and can no longer be picked.

Based on the sheer number of aces secured, Lev Yashin was the standout pick from the first round—definitely a step up from Kubala 😉.

As a reward, Richard Wilson gets the "Ask the Coach" joker. This allows him once during the competition—specifically during the third and final drafting round—to ask me whether his intended target will be available or blocked, allowing him to adjust his strategy accordingly.

A joker is also being handed out in this round as well.

The player whose selection earns the most aces gets the power to override other players' blocks once during the tournament.
Essentially, whoever holds this joker can secure their target even if someone else tries to block them in the same round. The joker itself only cancels one block, but the total number of successful peaks achieved in the first round determines how much "muscle" the joker has, increasing the number of blocks that can be bypassed.
For instance, if someone successfully picks three times in the first round, they could use this joker to override three different players' blocks, but not four.

The holder of this joker must explicitly declare their intent to use it when submitting their peak for a player they anticipate will face heavy competition.

Well, it’s only been one round and we’re already looking at our first coaching change. Because the team failed to meet the basic contractual obligations, Team 14 has decided to part ways with their current coach, Stan Mršić. The veteran strategist couldn't manage to hit a single peak, so Dejan Govedarica was essentially dropped into his spot.

Tomislav Stipić is stepping in to take over the reins.



His very first words upon taking the job? "I've got plenty of time on my hands right now, so why not?"

To avoid any unnecessary complications following this late addition, the new competitor won't be participating in the chat thread and is strictly prohibited from trying to guess the identities of the other participants.
