So, I was wondering if we could turn this into a collective thread where everyone can drop their suggestions for improving the site, if that's cool with you guys.

And if it’s doable, I really hope the admins find it worth their while to actually take these ideas and run with them. 🤷

Also, just one quick question—and please ignore me if I totally missed it since I'm still the new guy here! 😛

Is there a way to get a notification whenever someone Quotea us? It would make it so much easier to follow the conversation and jump back in so nobody misses out on getting an answer.

Thanks! 😉

The standard admin response is pretty straightforward: sending extra email notifications for every single quoted post would just bloat the database and strain the servers—plus, it messes with how ads are served and displayed.

Here’s a suggestion that might actually help—why not move the ads to the sides so they aren't squeezing the Reddit feed? It's what they do on ESPN and CNN, and honestly, the current setup looks terrible. I feel like I've got tunnel vision and it’s making me nauseous. Which is a change, considering most of my nausea comes from the posts themselves—not the layout! I just can't deal with it.

Another thought: maybe Jack could take another look at that old idea about starting (semi)annual subscriptions. Subscribers wouldn't get bombarded by ads, but the site would still be bringing in steady revenue regardless.

Actually, better yet—let’s just start a GoFundMe for the site 🙂
everyone chips in what they can, and then the owner can finally grab a new server 👋

Honestly, I think it’s going to feel incredibly weird not having 505 with the whole crew around—but hey, I guess you eventually get used to anything 🤣

No, but seriously, why isn't this proposal even being looked at? This Reddit has been falling apart at the seams for ages now.

Implementing a subscriber model would essentially mean the platform carries a heavy obligation to ensure those users get more than just an ad-free experience—we’re talking about guaranteed, high-speed performance too.

It really isn't just about whether the management has the good intentions to do it—it’s a matter of performing a proper cost-benefit analysis regarding the investment required to actually guarantee that kind of service. I mean, what happens if the total subscription revenue doesn't end up covering the massive overhead needed for the necessary hardware upgrades?

BTW, there's already a pretty significant number of people browsing the site without ads 😬, but that's certainly not the only reason things are moving at a snail's pace.

- Auto-Ban/Auto-Block
...a significant number of users actually want this via formal request,
which would finally let the admin team stop dealing with such absolute nuisances...
- Auto-Rules
...most people only agreed to them because they couldn't sign up without checking that box,
but if we introduced a specific option, wouldn't users be constantly bombarded by having to read the Terms of Service every single time they log in?
...how about an automatic logout immediately after a post is submitted...
- Auto-Limiter
...putting a cap on monthly posts within the General Discussion subforum...
- Auto-Clone
...allowing for up to 10 additional burner accounts during the registration process...
- Joker
...users earn a "Joker" based on their total post count or thanks received on certain threads,
and they could choose to trade that Joker in at any time for a card that instantly triggers a ban...
- Auto-Color
...letting moderators/Staff have a distinct color on the PDFs they manage,
while reverting back to the standard blue while they're just hanging out and posting elsewhere on Reddit...

...just one question for the OP: did you actually bother reading the section above?

I'm not saying your suggestion is bad, it's just... well, maybe a little unpopular. Personally, I've never come across a site that charges a subscription fee just for, honestly, basic site functionality (like normal speeds and accessibility, you know, without all the lag and stuff).
That seems, well, a bit pathetic 🤷
Your idea is fine, provided it includes other benefits—like, I don't know, a larger avatar, a bigger inbox, or other little perks that can be handled through the vBulletin admin panel for specific user groups, which people tend to enjoy 😁
. But using subscriptions to fund a server that would, among other things, allow everyone—not just subscribers—to use the site normally? That's probably not okay.
A charity drive would be a much better way to go, IMHO.
😁

I think you might have mixed me up with Nicholas King. 😕

And honestly? The idea for an optional subscription is just about offering little perks—you know, bigger avatars, fancy signatures, stuff like that. I don't get why anyone would call it "pathetic" to give users a choice. Of course, if people decide not to subscribe, they’ll still see ads. But the crew who opts in gets a totally ad-free experience. Look, running servers isn't free, bandwidth costs money, and we've gotta pay our moderators too—plus, what's the harm in having extra ways to fund things?

Yeah, I mixed up 🤦 sorry.

It feels like we're just talking past each other 🤣
No, honestly, the idea regarding ads is perfectly fine—that suggestion works for me.

My point was more about how pathetic it is that, in this day and age, we'd have to pay a subscription fee just to get decent loading speeds on Reddit or to avoid seeing 503 and 504 errors five hundred times a day. That’s what's sad. And if that's how it goes, the site is basically going to lose any chance of attracting new members.

Look, I'm saying the proposal for subscriptions and perks is totally fine, but I don't think it's right to use that as a way to fix server issues. It doesn't actually solve anything; non-subscribers will still be stuck with a broken experience. Or else subscribers end up footing the bill for a new server that everyone uses, which doesn't seem fair either.
If we follow the principle of "give whatever you want and however much you want," then nobody should feel like they're being treated unfairly.😁

I might be rambling here, but my kid is screaming in my ear, so I don't really have the bandwidth to go back and check exactly what nonsense I just typed out.😁

Afkors, I think we're just seeing things differently—you seem to view this subscription as an absolute necessity, whereas I’ve always pitched it as more of a "nice-to-have" extra.

As far as I know, no. But you can subscribe to a thread to get email alerts whenever there's a new reply.

If you look at the top of the Reddit page, there’s a "Thread Tools" option. Just select "Subscribe to Thread" and pick how you want to be notified.

Also, questions like this belong over in the Help Center. 😉

not really 🤣
but, honestly, if a subscription were the only way to actually use this site without hitting constant 50x errors, then I guess it basically becomes "mandatory." 🤷

I suppose your logic is rooted in this ingrained "expectation of free access," which—if we are being perfectly honest—isn't actually an inherent requirement 🙂. A free platform isn't some fundamental "right" of the internet community; it's simply the current state of affairs (though, naturally, if one expects free moderation, one should probably expect to pay for it too)
.
It is entirely possible that subtly coercing people into subscriptions (you know, that whole "you don't *have* to subscribe, but you won't really be able to participate effectively" 😁 approach) might result in saying goodbye to a significant chunk of both old and new users—I'm not sure I would personally sign off on that, even if it meant having an avatar displayed at its natural, rather massive, 25-centimeter 🥳 size and an inbox large enough to handle all my incoming mail—but, then again, it is possible that the remaining user base would still be large enough to sustain discussions and generate revenue for the owners. It is also quite possible that the small handful of trolls who spend their days spamming PDFs with burner accounts and recycled threads would finally be discouraged from such antics.

Anything is possible, I guess. 😁.

Wait, what do you mean by paying moderators? 🤣
I haven’t been paid to moderate on any site I’ve ever worked on—past or present. 🤣

And honestly—and I mean truly—I have zero interest in being paid if it means turning this into a "pay a subscription fee just so you can browse without getting hit by 50x errors" kind of situation.

There are plenty of other sites out there that are free and actually have servers that don't crash every few minutes. The only reason I'm still here is habit, I guess, and a few connections.
If you implement a subscription based on my rather grim scenario above, I’d hand in my moderation duties, log out, and disappear into the night immediately. 🤣

Again, a subscription is an interesting idea—it's okay, I suppose. There could be various benefits.
But, making people pay just so they aren't attacked by constant errors would be a very bad move; it would drive away members, both current ones and future users.

I’m writing this assuming that subscribers would get to browse in peace while the poor non-subscribers continue to be bombarded with errors.
I really have no clue if that's even technically feasible 🤣 though I suspect it isn't 🤣 and that the only real fix is a brand new server. Only then would the site run smoothly for everyone, regardless of whether they pay or not.

Honestly, if you aren't out there breaking the rules, you shouldn't need any kind of protection—especially not from the moderators or the admin team itself.

Then you’d tell the boss to start moderating the protected users. 😬 Honestly, I think both the boss and the protected ones would be regretting that move pretty quickly.

No, but seriously, why isn't this proposal even being looked at? This Reddit has been falling apart at the seams for ages now.

I wouldn't donate a single cent. Why? Because I've spent years volunteering my time to moderate several subforums, putting in an immense amount of effort. Not once was there even a whisper of a tip, though I never expected one in the first place.
I’m sure there’s a reason for it. And no, I don't just block every damn ad just for the hell of it. 😁They just waste resources on things that don't even need fixing.
