I caught this one last night, and man, what an interesting topic to dive into...
It’s really a film for anyone who’s ever been haunted by a guilty conscience over something they did—something that ended up changing their entire life forever. It truly tugs at your heartstrings, and the cinematography is just gorgeous. Has anyone else had a chance to watch it yet?
If you have, I’d love to hear your take on how you interpreted that ending...

Really great movie. It was strange, totally unique, just a beautiful piece of sci-fi drama...

I’ve looked into a few different theories regarding how it all ends, and while some of them make sense to me, I have to admit I’m still feeling a little bit turned around by the whole thing...

I thought the movie was fantastic too.

Here’s how I interpreted the ending:
spoiler:
On Another Earth, she didn't experience that tragedy. She went off to college and graduated at the top of her class. She even applied for the same position, but this time her research focused on something positive instead... At least, I’d like to think that’s what happened. 🙂

@Susan Ramirez2
That's exactly how I saw it too—honestly, it’s such a cool concept, and easily one of the better indie sci-fi flicks I've come across lately...

Me too.
Such a great film. It had an incredible atmosphere and really stuck with me. I was still thinking about it long after the credits rolled. Highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it yet and enjoys this kind of "philosophical" sci-fi.😁

I am just so thrilled that at least a few of you jumped in to chat about this, because honestly, I am absolutely loving everything about it—the story, the cast, the cinematography, the whole vibe... it’s just wonderful! As soon as I caught a glimpse of that trailer, I knew right away it was going to be right up my alley. And it’s actually quite refreshing to see how different Susan Ramirez2 interpreted the ending compared to me... it’s clearly been designed with so much intention to leave us with a million different ways to wrap it all up 🙂
such a stunning film 🙂

spoiler:
The way I saw it was that she ends up causing the exact same accident over in Another Earth, except this time she doesn't hand him the plane ticket, which would imply that back in the first country, she and her double are the ones left behind, while over in the second country, he and his double are together 😁
spoiler end.

As soon as I caught that trailer, I just knew it was going to resonate with me. And, you know, I actually appreciate how Susan Ramirez2 interpreted the film differently than I did. It feels like they intentionally left things open-ended so there could be endless ways to wrap it up. 🙂
it’s such a beautiful film 🙂

spoiler alert:

SPOILER: I don't think that's quite right. 🤷 My take is a bit different because of that final scene—where she shows up from country 2 to country 1 looking totally polished and professional. That "corporate" look really suggests that nothing went wrong back in country 2. Instead, she likely finished her degree, climbed the career ladder, and secured a high-level position. She’s doing fine, which means she never actually had any reason to hand over her ticket to travel to country 1...
I'd love to hear if anyone else has thoughts or their own interpretation of how it ends...

Austin Roberts4 said:SPOILER: I honestly don't think you're reading that right.🤷 I mean, look at that final scene where she arrives from country 2 onto country 1 looking absolutely polished, like she’s straight out of a corporate boardroom, which really suggests that things never went south for her back in country 2—she likely finished her degree, climbed the career ladder, and earned enough that she didn't have to hand over her ticket just to get to country 1....
I would truly love it if someone else chimed in to share their own take on this...

It just feels logical to me that she wouldn't show up on country 1 wearing the same work clothes she uses for cleaning... and honestly, that woman from country 2 didn't exactly look like she was walking on sunshine in that last scene, either. But hey, at the end of the day, you can't definitively say one theory is right and the other is wrong, because I feel like they could all be possible. It's actually quite fascinating to see how differently everyone perceives things🙂

Sure, anyone can interpret things however they want. It’s interesting to see people have such different takes.

SPOILERS
Look, the reason I'm leaning toward the other theory (the one Susan Ramirez2 and Austin Roberts4 hold): it feels like the filmmakers went out of their way in those final scenes to show that she from the other country is completely different from her counterpart on the first planet. It wasn't just the clothes—it was her attitude and the whole vibe.😁

Emily Rogers67 said:It just seems logical that she wouldn't show up on Earth 1 wearing the same work clothes she uses for cleaning...

They could have easily portrayed her as a "normal" clone of the woman from the first country. She probably would've worn a hoodie or a cap—something we've already seen her character wear. This felt totally out of character, which is why I assumed life for the woman from the other country took a different path entirely.

Emily Rogers67 said:That woman from country 2 didn't exactly look happy in the final scene.

She doesn't need to look happy. I think she's just as confused seeing her "double" on the other planet. She might even be thinking, "Damn, you look terrible, what happened to you?" 😁

Then there's this whole idea about life synchronicity between countries breaking the moment a person becomes aware of the other world (once it becomes visible). Given what happened right before the accident... it makes more sense to me that things had already started diverging.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to dismiss your experience or your take on the movie. I'm just explaining why I favor this interpretation of the ending.🙂

Karen Green97 said:Honestly, she doesn't even need to look happy; I imagine she’s just as baffled as anyone else seeing her own 'double' in another country. And maybe she's even thinking... "Good grief, you look terrible, what on earth happened to you?" 😁

Yeah, I actually thought of that too, so I totally agree with you there 🙂

Just so we're clear, I don't want to dismiss your take or how you felt about the movie at all, I'm just trying to explain why I'm so drawn to this specific interpretation of the ending 🙂

SPOILER ALERT!
No worries at all, I actually love hearing everyone share their different perspectives 🙂 clearly, I'm being a bit of a pessimist here 😁 if we assume that in country 2, there are now two versions of John Burroughs 😁 and only one wife to go around... but I suppose that's beside the point now...
Okay, so if nothing tragic actually happened on country 2, then I'd guess she traveled over from there purely out of curiosity, especially since we see after her release that she was always fascinated by space... and ended up getting accepted into MIT...

But seriously, I find it absolutely incredible that the actress sat down with the director and wrote the screenplay herself... it's honestly so impressive 🙂 and the fact that she writes her own scripts just so she can star in them is such a cool thing to do 😁

So, I gave it a look.

If I were the one calling the shots, my version would go something like this. SPOILER ALERT: The girl from country 2 actually makes it big—she hits all those milestones she dreamed about back when she was enrolling in college—and as a little reward for all that hard work, she gets a trip to country 1. I suppose the reason she was so caught off guard when she ran into her fellow countrywoman1 is simply because she’d spent the whole time imagining they were practically identical, only to realize that her compatriot1 is actually a completely different person altogether.

But honestly, what really trips me up is why John even agreed to the trip in the first place? It seemed like such a half-baked idea from the start, unless, I don't know, maybe he just desperately needed an escape from his actual life and from Rhoda??

And by the way, that sex scene between them felt totally unnecessary to me. They could have just shown them kissing or something along those lines, I guess.

copperstag95 said:I'm actually more curious about why John agreed to go on the trip in the first place, since he seemed to think the whole thing was a terrible idea from the start... or maybe he just wanted a way to escape his current life and Rhoda??

SPOILER:
In that scene where she hands him the plane ticket, she mentions a theory that their lives (on country 1 and country 2) lost their synchronicity the exact moment one planet became aware of the other's existence... and that moment happened just before the car accident. If that's true, there’s a real chance that back on country 2, his wife and child are still alive, and I can totally see him wanting to find them... though he'd likely run into a version of himself there too 😁
maybe he just wanted to head over there to check on his family and hunt for a "happier" version of Rhoda? while this version of her ended up here on country 1 😁

It’s a strange one—definitely an oddity—but I can't deny it was actually a good film. It left me feeling a bit conflicted, to be honest. My final verdict? A solid 7/10.

Austin Roberts4 said:SPOILERI think you’ve missed the mark on this one—your interpretation just isn't quite hitting the nail on the head.🤷 Why does she show up in that final scene looking like she just stepped out of a boardroom in Manhattan? She arrives from country 2 to country 1 looking completely polished—full business attire, professional, poised. To me, that’s a massive tell. It suggests that life back in country 2 was never about surviving accidents or scraping by; instead, it was about hitting the books, finishing university, and climbing the corporate ladder. She clearly holds a high-level position and pulls in a serious salary—which means there was never any desperate need to hand over her ticket to get to country 1 in the first place.
I’d honestly love to see if anyone else wants to weigh in here—it would be interesting to hear how you all interpret this situation differently from my own take.

I think what that scene is actually trying to drive home is the idea that this alternative version of our country is fully functional—she’s got her degree, she’s established, she's put together. Besides, aren't we forgetting the fact that the film explicitly mentions this other version of America appeared four years ago, right when the synchronization of events caused the split? Everything about this points to that conclusion. 🙂

It’s decent, I guess, but nothing to write home about.

Maybe give the movie LOVE a shot instead.

It hits a similar note...

That would mean there's a chance his wife and kid are still alive on country 2, and he’d definitely want to see them. But there's probably a version of him there too. 😁
Maybe he wanted to go there just to find his wife and hunt for a "happier" version of Rhoda? And then she ended up coming to country 1. 😁

Yeah, I don't see how finding his wife and kid—alongside another version of himself—would actually be a comfort. That sounds incredibly frustrating. Sure, seeing them alive and talking to them is great, but then what? Eventually, he’ll have to come back to country 1 because he won't fit in there anymore. 😁 He'd just face that agonizing separation all over again and ultimately have to let them go. Why put himself through that torture? At least that's my take. I don't know... maybe knowing they're out there living happy lives is enough for him, even if it isn't with him. Either way, he remains a tragic figure. 🤷

As for this idea about him searching for a "happier" version of Rhoda... I highly doubt it. A version of her from another country (a successful, happy Rhoda) and the version of him from country 1 wouldn't have anything in common. Their emotional bond exists specifically because they are both psychologically broken. She’s dealing with the guilt of killing two people and the fact that her life was basically ruined (no degree, no ambition, etc.), while he's lost his entire family and sees no point in anything. Those exact traumas and mental states are what pulled them together.

Karen Green97 said:yeah, I don't really see how finding his wife and child there—along with someone who's basically his mirror image—is supposed to bring him any comfort at all...

...but honestly, I think it was their shared brokenness that pulled them together emotionally... she's carrying the weight of having killed two people and that crushing sense of guilt, plus the fact that her life is pretty much stalled out since she didn't finish college and lacks direction, while he's just lost his entire family and can't find any meaning left in the world... so, it's really those specific circumstances and their mental states that created that bond...

I actually feel like he should have stayed, especially because he was starting to develop real feelings for her 🙂 though, I can't help but wonder if what she felt was true love, or if she just felt like she owed him something, maybe even just her company?

At first, it was definitely the latter. But I think she started developing real feelings for him toward the end of the movie. That moment when he plays the flute for her is the turning point.😁 You can see it in how she looks at him. So yeah, I'm betting her feelings were genuine by the end.

I forgot to mention this earlier:

Yes, agreed. I watched a few interviews with her. She's an interesting woman; feels like she actually has something to say.🙂
Have you seen this movie where she also co-wrote and starred? The reviews look decent, so I'll check it out soon.

I actually watched it right after Another Earth.

I don't know, it wasn't exactly anything special, I guess; it felt mostly like a bit of a bore, even if the subject matter itself was quite compelling, though it is a shame they didn't flesh it out a bit more, at least regarding the research into her specific profession.
