Hey, I’m dealing with a total nightmare regarding my audio drivers. Just wiped my PC and now there's zero sound. I checked Everest to see what driver I actually need, but every time I try to install it, the installer just crashes halfway through with a "continue anyway or stop" prompt. If I hit continue, the computer just reboots and I'm right back where I started—still no sound.
The motherboard is an IBM 8417 A2G
And the audio is an EB ICH5 AC97

Thanks in advance

I’m sorry I don't have a definitive answer for you, but I’ve run into a nearly identical nightmare myself... In a moment of sheer stupidity, I wiped my Intel driver and tried to force an update, and now? Now, every time I boot the machine, Windows starts up, detects "new" hardware (AC97), and then—before I can even blink—the whole system just triggers an automatic reset. It’s stuck in this endless, infuriating loop. At this point, I've actually had to pull the plug entirely just to stop the cycle.

Does anyone have any advice on how to fix this from Safe Mode? I need a way out of this mess!

Which motherboard are we talking about here? I need the manufacturer and the specific model.

Thanks for stepping up to help... I'm stuck at work right now—honestly, I can't even remember the specs off the top of my head. I should be back home around 8 PM, so I'll take a look then and get back to you. I'll have my laptop handy to double-check everything... maybe I'll even hunt down a new driver online if there isn't some other way to fix this mess...

The motherboard is a Seagate MS9127C.
The drive in question is a Seagate DiamondMax plus 8.
And just to clarify—the graphics card is a GeForce 4 with 64MB of DDR.

I tried running a System Restore from Safe Mode last night, but the whole thing is just a total wash—it simply won't take. Every single time I boot up into Safe Mode, things seem fine for maybe thirty or forty-five seconds, but then—boom—the system just gives up. It either starts acting like that AC97 audio is some brand-new piece of hardware being plugged in, or it triggers a complete reset. Why does this even happen? I’m stuck in this loop where the hardware detection keeps tripping over itself right when I'm trying to fix the OS. It's incredibly frustrating.
So, where does one even begin when everything starts falling apart? What am I supposed to do, where am I even meant to go, and how exactly am I going to fix this mess if I'm expected to handle it all by myself?

I really appreciate all the advice...

Download it, install it, and it should work just fine.

Thanks, I appreciate it... I'll give this a shot tonight...

But how on earth am I supposed to stop it from auto-resetting?!
If I don't allow it to reset while in Safe Mode, the thing just shuts down Windows entirely, kicks me straight into the BIOS, and then I'm stuck having to reset it all over again... what kind of loop is that?

There has to be a way to somehow strip out those faulty components from Safe Mode—at least, that’s what the BIOS keeps telling me when it boots up.

Are we talking about a full system reboot here?
Explain yourself, so even God can understand what you mean. 🙂

So, here’s the situation: when I boot it up today, Windows actually loads just fine—it's a bit sluggish, sure, but I usually have enough time to get a couple of things done before the whole thing falls apart. I might even start digging around through some files. But then, right as the system tries to initialize that AC97 audio setup, everything just hits a wall. It reads the audio system, and boom—instant reboot. Why does this keep happening?

I tried booting this thing up in Safe Mode—specifically choosing the option to prevent an automatic restart after the error loads—but what’s the point? It feels like I'm just running in circles. Every single time I try to power it back on, it boots right back into that same loop, reads through all those ridiculous error messages, and then—as if it's doing me some sort of favor—Windows just shuts itself down entirely. It kicks me straight back into the BIOS for "protection." Is there actually any logic to this, or is the system just actively working against me at this point?

It says right there that I need to remove something—but honestly, where on earth am I supposed to look for that? It’s just sitting there in the text, giving me instructions, yet it doesn't actually point me toward the setting. Does anyone actually know where this is located?

I tried everything—I went into Device Manager and attempted to wipe out that AC97 driver along with every other piece of audio nonsense listed there—but what was the result? Absolutely nothing. I did a full system reset, thinking that might finally clear the slate, but after the reboot, it’s all right back where it started. Why does this keep happening?

I feel like this should be a straightforward fix, really—but I’ll admit, I’m hitting a bit of a wall here because I just don't have the technical depth required to bridge the gap.

The BIOS is spitting this out:
Technical information:

***STOP:0x0000007E (0xc0000005,0xF9C57A03,0xF9EFC9CC,0xF9EFC6C8)

*** sysaudio.sys - address F9C57A03 base at F951000, Datestamp 41107f1a

That’s exactly what I’m seeing... and then it goes on to tell me I need to remove certain components...

So, where am I even supposed to look for this? How do I actually go about deleting it?

This whole mess started right after I went into the Device Manager and tried to update some stupid audio driver.

My mistake... I meant manager, not management!!

So, if you go into System Properties/Hardware/Device Manager/

I managed to mess something up there—a total rookie error—and now I need to figure out how to undo it. Should I try to revert the changes, or would it be smarter to just wipe it clean and start the installation from scratch? I honestly can't decide which way is the more intelligent move here.

Go ahead and check the Device Manager under whatever you messed up and try using the RollBack driver

Alright, I'll give that a shot tonight once I get back home... thanks—I'll let you know how it goes... cheers.

I’m running into the exact same headache. My computer just won't play nice with audio—it works for a little bit right after I reboot, but then everything just goes dead silent again.
From what I can tell, my system keeps throwing an error saying the GENERIC BLUETOOTH ADAPTER isn't working properly. Do you think I should try a clean reinstall of the
driver? And if so, where on earth can I actually find a reliable download for it? Thanks a million!

Go into your Control Panel, hit System, then open up Device Manager... if you don't actually have Bluetooth on your rig, just go ahead and delete that "Bluetooth" entry. Then, head over to the sound settings, right-click, go into properties, and try hitting "Update Driver." Just let Windows hunt for the updates online by itself.
(If there’s an issue with your hardware—like if the sound device shows up with a yellow warning icon—you'll know something's definitely wonky)

Thanks a ton for getting back to me so quickly. I followed your instructions to a T, and everything is working perfectly now—no more of that annoying "yellow" warning icon showing up.

Ugh, seriously? Now the sound is gone again... I went through the whole troubleshooting process, fixed everything up, and it actually worked for a bit, but now I’m back to square one. Total silence. What else am I supposed to try at this point?
