So, I'm totally planning on picking up some 2.1 speaker setups for my desk setup—and I was just wondering, do I actually need to go out and grab a fancy new sound card for this, or is the standard built-in audio chip you find in most laptops going to be totally fine?

The built-in card should be fine enough... but "fine" depends on how much cash you're willing to drop and how much volume you actually need from your speakers. You might want to check out some Logitech, Labtec, or Genius setups...

So, I’m in the market for some new speakers—I’ve got my eye on these based purely on aesthetics:

The catch is the user reviews aren't exactly glowing—apparently, the subwoofer is pretty weak. On the other hand, these look like they might be a step up:

Honestly, I’m not a huge fan of the look, plus they carry a higher price tag. Since I don't plan on cranking the volume too high anyway—mostly out of respect for my neighbors—the first pair might actually be the smarter move.

A buddy of mine has some older Creative Technology gear that sounds fantastic, and looking at this brand, these don't seem half bad either:

I’m just not sure if Creative Technology speakers generally outperform Logitech or maybe even something like Logitech.

What should I go with?

Look, if you're stuck with some neighbor's setup featuring 2.1 speakers pushing maybe 2 or 3 watts per channel, don't expect to actually hear any music... 😁

It really just boils down to how much cash you're willing to drop on speakers... check out this thread for some context:

And honestly, while Logitech is obviously great for peripherals, there are plenty of other high-quality speaker brands out there—sometimes even better and cheaper than Logitech. Those Genius models people were mentioning are solid, and you can definitely find some gems from Creative Technology too, but when it comes to pure value, these beat them all: — these are really good speakers with great power and sound, and they won't break the bank...

Look, money isn't exactly a huge hurdle here—but I’m certainly not looking to just throw cash down the drain for speakers (let's cap it at $400 max $167).

A buddy of mine picked up a pair for around $200 last year, and honestly, they work perfectly fine.

I wouldn't call myself an audiophile or anything. I just want to be able to listen to some music or watch a movie without it sounding terrible. The first ones I mentioned caught my eye because they actually look great—whereas those ones you suggested? They look dated, like they haven't been updated since the early 2000s.

The ones from that other post looked promising

My only hesitation is that the satellite speakers seem a bit oversized.

Quick question: is there actually a massive difference in sound quality between a 2.0 setup and a 2.1 system?

Nah, it’s really just a matter of taste... with those 2.1 setups, you either get crappy subs that aren't worth the plastic they're made of, or ones that are way too overpowered... I guess that's just how it goes. I've had these Pulse speakers for a while now and the sound is solid... the satellites are perfect for filling up a room, but I can't push the sub past 40% or else it'll totally drown out the satellites twice over.

As for the 2.0 systems, the low end is actually handled quite well—it's not like they lack bass entirely... I could tell you about those Genius wooden ones at 60W; everyone raves about them and I've heard them in person, they're seriously punchy... the bass is really well-tuned, tight, and expressive... it's not that bone-shaking, brain-rattling kind of thump, but more of a softer, more refined vibe.

They look decent enough, and 2x15W isn't a bad starting point—they’ll probably be just fine... but honestly? I haven't actually heard them yet, so I can't say for sure. Sorry...

Alright, thanks. I’ll do some more digging—planning to head out and buy everything this Monday. Honestly, though, I had no idea the selection for speakers was this thin. Plus, they seem pretty overpriced compared to other computer gear.

It seems most people are rushing to grab Logitech gear, while Creative Technology is being completely overlooked. Take these speakers in the photo, for instance; they’re fantastic, and since they feature a dedicated two-way design with separate drivers for the mids and highs, you're getting much better performance than any single or dual Full Range setup could ever provide—that's just basic audio physics.☕😁

I was actually hunting for 2.1 speakers recently myself. Based on my research—which involved way too many hours scouring the web and reading countless reviews (it’s honestly frustrating that we don't have any dedicated hi-fi listening rooms here in the States where you can actually test gear before buying...)—I figured Creative might actually have better options in the tier just below the $167 from Logitech, but once you get past the $167, Logitech really starts to outclass them.

Here’s the list of what I was looking at about three months ago (back when I hadn't quite decided how much cash I wanted to drop on this, so I was basically looking at everything):

Creative Inspire T3100 $78
Creative Inspire T3030 $101
Logitech X-230 $123
Creative iTrigue 3330 $161
Logitech Z4 $209
JBL SPYRO $296
Logitech Z2300 $367

Anyway, looking at the prices around here... I saw that I could snag the Z2300 brand new in the US for $85 during Christmas (on sale, obviously, but that felt like a legitimate discount; I think they usually go for up to $150, unlike those stores that drop a price by a measly 10-$$6.75 and then act like they're doing you a favor). From what I've noticed lately, prices seem a bit higher than they were over the holidays, probably because of the dollar fluctuations or something. You can check for yourself:

Personally, I ended up going with the Z4. I'm relatively happy with them, though I guess there are moments when I find myself wishing I'd grabbed the Z2300 instead...
