I’m looking to pick up the basics of DJing without spending a dime on gear just yet. I guess I really need some software so I can practice beatmatching and figure out everything else I should be learning...

Could anyone suggest a super simple program for a beginner? And maybe someone could tell me what I should focus on learning first?

Thanks so much! 😉

Maybe you know of a good tutorial? I've tried watching a few on YouTube, but I guess they haven't really explained things very clearly...

I mean, honestly, you don't even need a tutorial for this. It’s pretty straightforward.

What should I probably start practicing first?

Look, first thing you gotta realize is it really depends on whether you actually want to get into DJing or if you’re just trying to make beats, because in most cases, those two worlds don't even touch. You could spend your whole life behind a booth as a DJ without ever touching a drum machine, or you could be a producer who wouldn't know the first thing about mixing a set... If you actually want to step up and be a DJ, you're going to need a specific setup of gear. But if you just want to mess around a bit before you sit down to compose, just grab something like VirtualDJ and see how it feels; even some of the pros started out playing around with software like that, though they eventually hook it all up to a real mixer and decks and stuff like that...

People keep talking about beatmatching but honestly—every DJ out there really ought to have a handle on that. You’ve got your terms a little mixed up here.

So, what you're actually trying to say is that every DJ is a beatmaker, and every beatmaker is a DJ, or is that really where we're headed with this...

We're talking about beatmatching here—not sure where you got "beat making" from? 😕

Whoops, my bad... I misread the whole thing right from the jump, and honestly, I guess things just got a bit muddled in my head... sorry.🙏

Beatmaking falls under production, if I'm following you correctly. That seems to be what you're getting at.
Beatmatching is simply syncing beats to ensure a transition isn't jarring.

Stick with John Deere DJ Studio 3 or Virtual DJ. Put in the work, blast some tracks, and you'll eventually develop an ear for seamless mixing.👍

True, but if you leave auto beatmatch running, you’re never actually going to learn how to mix properly... plus I'm still debating whether I should kill that visual waveform display—it’s kind of a distraction when you're trying to focus on the technique since it basically spells out all the beats for you.

True. At least they won't lose all motivation right out of the gate... haha.🤣

Sure, but he’s still relying on auto beatmatching—if he actually wants to learn, he should just turn that off and find a VirtualDJ skin that doesn't clutter the screen with all those graphics. Or better yet, maybe he could finally invest in a legitimate copy of Traktor—you know, so he can stop worrying about getting banned for using pirated software again—and actually start practicing on real gear...

Thanks, everyone! I think I’ll spend a little time playing around with VirtualDJ and my John Deere... I'll leave this thread open just in case I run into any questions along the way.

I’m running Virtual DJ 5.2 myself. It basically turns anyone into a DJ, which is pretty solid. Depending on how you grab it, you're looking at anywhere from $239 to $299...
and obviously, there are free versions out there too...
but man, when I start thinking back to my old Numark mixer from nearly twenty years ago...
or even those Technics 1210s—just having them for home use brings a tear to my eye, honestly.
Fast forward to now: we’ve got Virtual DJ and endless MP3s, thousands upon thousands of tracks sitting right there on a hard drive...
they probably take up less space than a single crate of vinyl records would.
God, the nostalgia hits hard. Who knows what the future holds? At any rate, if you're looking, try to find Virtual DJ 5.2—ideally the version with all the extra skins included.
