Anyone know which exercises actually work for glutes? Looking to tone them up and lean out a bit.
Thanks

That’s just wrong. Your glutes actually work the hardest when you squat below parallel.
Along with squats, I’d suggest adding hyperextensions to the routine.

Biking and hiking uphill (just coasting back down 😉

Honestly, I think a StairMaster would be killer too.

Hyperextension??
Keep all that medical jargon for the shower, man. We aren't all doctors or pro trainers here.

Hannah Scott69,
there are seriously so many glute exercises out there that you could try a different one every single day. But, if your goal is to tone things down, you’re definitely going to need some cardio—and honestly, hitting the roller rink is just perfect for that.

Next time I come over for coffee, I'll show you five or six moves that are absolute game-changers, but until then, just play around with it! 🙂

Here are a few to get you started:
1. lunges,
2. squats (though I wouldn't suggest going super deep; just aim for a right angle,
3. a wall sit—basically, lean against the wall with your knees bent at 90°, like you're sitting in an invisible chair. Try to hold it for at least a full minute, even though it's brutal... it's amazing for your quads, too.
4. quadruped leg lifts—get on all fours and lift one leg at a time (you can keep it straight or bend the knee)

Don't forget about your abductors either, not just the gluteus maximus. You can work those by lying on your side and lifting your leg, whether it's straight or bent.

These are just the basics, really. There are plenty of other moves I know, but they're kind of hard to explain just through a screen... I really have to show you in person! 🙂

- Place your hands firmly against the wall, then lean forward until your upper body is perfectly parallel to the floor. Reach one leg back behind you—keep it straight—until it’s also parallel to the ground.
- Now, drop down onto the floor and lie on your back with your knees bent. Make sure your spine is pressed flat against the mat. Lift your hips toward the ceiling until you really feel that squeeze in your glutes—you'll know it's working! Hold that tension for about ten seconds. Lower back down. You want to do plenty of reps here. 😁 If you’re feeling particularly ambitious—and let’s be honest, who isn't?—you can actually make this move even more intense (as if it weren't difficult enough already! 🙄 ). While you're holding that "up" position, try alternating by extending one leg straight out into the air—aim for about a 45-degree angle from the floor.
Best of luck out there!

So, how much work are we actually talking about here—like, what kind of routine, frequency, and duration does it take before you start seeing some real results?
I’ve been hitting the elliptical at my local gym for about a month and a half now—doing thirty minutes every other day—and honestly, I’m not seeing a thing. I know, I know, it hasn't even been that long, but you always hear people swearing that these machines work wonders for you, right?

I’ve been hitting the elliptical for a month and a half now—thirty minutes every other day—and honestly, I’m seeing absolutely nothing. I realize that’s a relatively short window, but you hear people everywhere claiming it works like magic!

Try to make it a daily thing. Aim for three sets of 12 to 15 reps—though if you're feeling ambitious, go for more 😉! Just don't expect a miracle overnight; give it at least two or three weeks before you start noticing a genuine difference.
By the way, have you tried measuring your circumference with a tape measure? It’s a crucial distinction—muscle is significantly denser than fat—so the scale might actually show a higher number even though you're torching fat and building lean muscle. My own stubborn layers melt away incredibly slowly (especially since I managed to pack on a few pounds in just a couple of weeks 😱), but the progress is visible—at least to me!—and my thighs are actually three centimeters slimmer now. 😉

nimbledriver81,
thanks so much!
I haven't really been tracking my measurements because—to be honest—losing weight isn't actually the goal here. I just want to tone up those muscles that seem to have gone soft overnight (is it just age catching up? Who knows!). I’ve never been one to follow a strict fitness regime or anything, though I always thought my glutes were decent enough. Since my weight hasn't really fluctuated much lately, I can't quite pin down why it happened, but suddenly everything feels... well, incredibly soft. I don't even know how to properly explain 🙂

It’s perfect for working on your glutes.
Maybe try getting a massage too...
Honestly, just head down to your local Gold's Gym and ask a trainer for some pointers.
Either way, you really have to make sure you're doing the exercises with proper form. Otherwise, you're just asking for an injury.

I honestly think using a stair climber would be a solid move too.

I’ve been hitting the elliptical for a month and a half now, thirty minutes every other day, and honestly? I’m seeing zero difference. I get it, it hasn't been that long, but everyone else swears it works wonders.

I did 45 minutes every single day, gradually cranking up the resistance. I’d basically "drive" forward until I was wiped out, then switch to five minutes of reverse, then back to forward again... After about four months of staying consistent (well, mostly, I skip a day here and there), my glutes feel way, way firmer 😁. Just give it a little more time; I'm pretty sure you'll start noticing changes soon 😉.

Though, if you ask me, nothing beats rollerblading for shaping things up. Between that and hiking, it’s easily my favorite way to stay active—it's just a blast.
The StairMaster is also solid if you're feeling like hitting the gym during the summer.
Anyway, I'm off to go roll through Central Park before the crowds show up.👋
