Hey, I'm looking for some advice. What kind of GPU would actually make a decent partner for my Intel Core i5 without completely choking out the processor?

Intel Core i5 black edition
AMD Radeon HD 6770 1GB
550W OC Zeal Fatality
4GB RAM
ASRock N68-VGS3 UCC

Thanks!

The AMD Radeon R7 265 might be a bit of a bottleneck, but I’d suggest trying to overclock it without touching the voltage—you could probably hit 3.6GHz if you're lucky. Just don't leave the voltage on Auto; make sure you set it to the grayed-out stock value instead. As long as you aren't cranking the voltage, your motherboard and cooler shouldn't have any real issues. 😉

I'd probably go with an MSI model; they usually offer a three-year warranty and their cooling setups seem pretty decent.

The rest of your build is decent. Personally, I’d go this route: with that ASUS board, you've got a solid foundation for overclocking that AMD Phenom. It’s still a powerhouse if you aren't chasing extreme benchmarks. It can still handle games at 1080p just fine.
That motherboard gives you some breathing room to upgrade to an x6 or even an x8 CPU down the road.

If you’re planning on overclocking, I really hope you have an aftermarket cooler for that AMD Phenom. The stock one won't cut it. Honestly, the factory cooler struggles even at stock settings, let alone when you start pushing the clock speeds.
And regarding this GPU:

What's the actual reason you want to swap out the card? Honestly, I think the 6770 is still a perfectly solid GPU.🙂

Look, it's solid enough if it's the GDDR5 version, but that's about it 😉

So, quietcyclist89 which one are you actually running? Are we talking the GDDR3 or the GDDR5 version?
Because if it's the five, who knows what kind of money you're just throwing away...
I mean, if you've already got the cash sitting there and nothing better to spend it on, why not just grab an SSD or something useful instead? 🙄

Solid? I mean, maybe back in 2011, but looking at the specs listed here, they're easily twice as powerful as that old hardware.

True enough... I guess the AMD Radeon R7 260X is already nearly twice as powerful.

So what?
I mean, seriously, what is wrong with you guys if you feel like you absolutely need a better GPU every single year... that's just straight-up obsession right there.😉
You can still play plenty of games on that card for a good while longer... ☕

lol 😬

I had an HD 5750 for four years, right up until this past April...

Those are just... facts, I guess, if you're looking to bump up the graphics settings without stressing too much about how new games actually run.

That motherboard only supports 95W CPUs, so there's no way that Intel Core i5 would be a Black Edition—meaning it shouldn't have an unlocked multiplier. 🤷

Look, I get that they are, but I'm just curious about the actual motivation for upgrading the GPU. If someone isn't worried about running the latest titles or isn't a total hardware geek, then maybe an upgrade isn't even necessary, in my opinion. THAT IS, assuming it's the GDDR5 version. 🙂

We never actually had a DDR3 version of the HD 6770 over here...

So, I guess if they're asking what the absolute limit is for this processor, they should probably look for something a bit more capable. Minimum requirements for some of the newer titles are starting to hit the level of an HD 5750 or an NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450, both of which are actually a little weaker than what he's running now.

It’s a decent card, but if they’re looking for better gaming performance, they’re obviously going to have to swap it out.

Honestly, it just feels like throwing money down the drain... I mean, if the guy has cash to burn just because he wants to play the latest releases, then whatever, that's his business, but to me? It seems totally pointless. If he actually can't run his games at all—or if they're barely crawling along—then yeah, sure, he should upgrade. But he *can* play them. What's the big deal with just turning the settings down to medium? At the end of the day, if a game is actually good, who cares if the graphics aren't cutting-edge?

I don't get why everyone jumped on this guy. He's just trying to swap out an sub-par GPU by today's standards for a decent mainstream card like an 🤷 AMD Radeon R7 265. That’s a perfectly logical upgrade while the rest of his rig still holds up.

Man, it's like he's trying to trade an 🤷 AMD Radeon HD 7970 for an
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 and suddenly everyone is lecturing him about wasting money and poor value.
$0.00 Meanwhile, you people posting $10,000 or $14,000 gaming rigs here on the forum think that's fine—that's not "wasting money," but this is?

Honestly, it’s all just noise. If they’re playing at low resolutions or just don't care about the fine details—well, that’s their business. I don't really get why people have such strong biases about it... This is a solid graphics card, and honestly, what more do you even need? I mean, why does it even matter if the guy wants to pick up an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti?

Look, I’m not trying to be a jerk or start any drama, I’m just genuinely curious. Personally, I wouldn't bother with an upgrade like that right now; sticking with the 6770 and that Intel Core i5 would be plenty for me for the time being. But hey, if you're chasing higher FPS and cranking up the settings, then go for it. 🙂

So, look—I’m running an Intel Core i5 with 8GB of RAM and an SSD right now, but since I don't have a dedicated graphics card at the moment, I’m basically just using it to browse the web. Following your logic, does that mean I should just sell my whole setup and pick up some cheap dual-core machine with 4GB of RAM because my current PC is "overkill" for simple browsing? If some people feel they need extreme high-end processors just to open Firefox, well, that's their business.

Bottom line is, just because an AMD Phenom and a Radeon HD 6770 might be plenty for you doesn't mean everyone else wants to struggle through basic web surfing with subpar hardware...

Did I ever say it had to be enough for everyone else? 🙄 I said it would be enough for ME, and I was simply asking why HE wants to swap out a card that is still perfectly solid—which is a fact. No need for the negative energy just because someone expresses a different opinion. 😲
