Best video players and similar software?

Greetings,
In your opinion, what’s the best video player out there—specifically one that plays nice with Windows Vista, handles subtitles without a headache, and ideally won't cost me a dime?

Also, does anyone know how to configure a media player so it actually loads the subtitles automatically?

On a side note, what’s the verdict on the full Nero Burning ROM suite? Any particular gripes or praises?

VLC Media Player is solid, I guess.

VLC Media Player is honestly the GOAT.
It’s got every codec you could ever need built right in—plus, it doesn't cost a dime.
Maybe give it a shot? A few people I know swear by it too, saying it's pretty okay.

As for Nero Burning ROM—I just stick to Microsoft. I prefer having just the Nero without all that extra bloatware attached; honestly, I think it’s barely even 30MB.

Here’s my take:

Everything VLC Media Player can handle, GOM Player handles too—and honestly, back in the day, that was the gold standard for testing players.

But if you really look at the specs, VLC actually supports even more formats than both of those combined.

So... GOM is great because it's lightweight, free, snappy, and super versatile. VLC has even better format support, but I just can't stand its interface.

VLC is technically superior, but it’s an eyesore, and there are certain little things that just grate on me, like how it handles subtitle rendering and all the settings tied to them. That's exactly why GOM is sitting at the top of my list right now.

Does anyone know of a media player that actually lets you shift subtitle timing on the fly? I’m looking for something that works just like BS Player—you know, where you can just hit CTRL plus the left or right arrow keys to nudge the subtitles forward or back by a second while you're watching the movie. It makes such a huge difference when they're out of sync, and honestly, some modern players make it feel like you need a PhD just to fix a simple lag. If anyone's got a recommendation for a player that isn't a total headache, let me know... thanks!

honestly, i don't think you can beat kmplayer when it comes to audio and video playback.
