I don't know what's gotten into me lately. For the past few days, I've been obsessively picking at my cuticles and skin until they bleed, and just now, I bit my lip raw. There’s this strange sense of relief in it—the taste of blood, the sting... it sounds twisted, but it’s the only thing that calms me down right now. I know it's a destructive habit, but I can't seem to stop.

You remind me of myself, it’s honestly unsettling 😁
only that I haven't just been this way for a few days—I've been like this since the day I was born.
I don't know what our move should be here, but we really need to kick this habit once and for all.

I’ve been this way since day one. I just have these manic stretches where I can't stop biting; I spend all day doing it and honestly loving the sensation. It’s pretty revolting when I look at what I've done, but I can't seem to pull myself away. -.-'

Honestly, that sounds more like some deep psychological study you'd find in a textbook.

I’d say this belongs in a psychology textbook. You really have to dig deep to figure out what kind of mental glitch makes someone actually enjoy this, or if it's just some compulsive habit they can't shake.

I used to do the exact same thing all the time. Eventually, I just bit the bullet and got braces, and then I couldn't go back. After wearing them for a few years, I think I finally broke the habit completely, so now I’m doing just fine 🙂

Honestly, you just have to look yourself in the eye and say "no." It’s that simple. Every habit has an off-switch, much like how it's easy to quit smoking. You just make the internal call—tell yourself you aren't doing it anymore, and that's the end of the discussion. Period. Though, I'll admit, breaking this particular cycle is going to be a bit more of a climb...

Relying solely on willpower isn't the most effective approach—it often leaves you feeling deprived, creating this constant internal tension and a nagging urge to go back to the old way. It’s actually explained quite well in the book "easy to quit smoking."

The better path is to truly understand the root of the issue. Once you reach that realization, changing your behavior becomes much more natural because you finally see how much it was actually holding you back.

I bit my lip so hard yesterday that the bleeding just wouldn't stop; it looked more like a deep cut than a simple bite...

Why not head over to the psychology subforum? There are plenty of experts there, plus people who have likely dealt with something similar to what you're going through.
Since you're still quite young—maybe even just starting out—this might just resolve itself naturally. But if it’s truly weighing on you, there's no harm in seeing a therapist.
I highly doubt anyone on a random forum is going to hand you some magic solution to fix everything overnight.
At the end of the day, it really comes down to whether you've decided you actually want to tackle this—if you're tired of it, for one. If you've made that choice, you'll start taking steps to address it.

Are you feeling the pressure? Is anxiety clawing at you? I have a friend who picks at her skin—yes, she actually picks it—until she’s bleeding.
She leans toward being obsessive, though I wouldn't go so far as to call it a clinical pathology, yet her anxiety remains quite intense.

But let us return our focus to you.
What you are experiencing could simply be a mindless habit, or perhaps it is a physical manifestation of your current struggle to cope with stress.
How old are you? If you are still in your teens or early twenties, this is likely just a passing phase, though even then, if it is causing you distress, it is worth addressing.
How are your relationships with others?
How is the dynamic within your family?
And most importantly, how is your relationship with yourself?
Is there something specific weighing heavily on your mind?
Are you perhaps attempting to use one form of pain to mask another?

There is no need to answer these questions here; instead, take some time for quiet introspection. If you truly feel this has become an issue, seek out a professional psychologist.
Everything will turn out fine.😉
