Blade (1998)

I caught this just yesterday. Honestly, my God, what a collection of infantile storylines. I wouldn't have minded if they had actually started with the vampire elements, but having that incredibly grating kid Dorf morphing into some sort of monster amidst all those rituals was a total disaster. As the movie dragged toward the end, it just became increasingly unbearable and distasteful. There are a few decent action sequences—don't get me wrong, they're fine for kids—but the overall impression is a mess. This is really a movie for children under ten.

Please, let’s be serious. Deacon Frost is the absolute standout here; anything else is just noise. His performance is quite possibly the only redeeming quality of the film.

He’s irritating to an extreme degree. I wouldn't call myself a violent person, but watching him on screen made me want to deck him right then and there... just such an arrogant, loudmouthed brat... that's the impression he left on me.
The movie itself feels like it's just a step above the trash they broadcast daily on ABC starring Dolph Lundgren, Michael Dudikoff, and the rest of that crowd.
And that ending with all the blood and skeletons flying out of... ugh... gross. Just disgusting.

So, I finally sat down last night to try and get through the supposedly legendary *Blade*. Honestly? Neither the story nor the plot could hold my interest for more than a few minutes, and don't even get me started on the acting. "Classic"? Please. After about thirty minutes of staring at the screen, I just turned off the TV and went to bed. It wasn't even one of those delightfully terrible movies that you force yourself to finish just to see how bad they can actually get. It didn't intrigue me on any level whatsoever. Just a total waste of time.

Whatever, man. It’s basically just a movie to kill some time if you're bored out of your mind. Nothing you'd actually go out of your way to watch—like, seriously, you wouldn't seek this out. I mean, look, if it's your turn to pick the flick, sure, fine... you could sit through it. But don't expect me to ever suggest it on my own.

People seriously have no clue how to enjoy comic book adaptations.😢

Personally, I wasn't even feeling "Sin City" or Deadpool—even though everyone seems to absolutely love them. I can't exactly say they were bad, mostly because I can barely even remember the details, but... man, it felt like such overhyped nonsense to me. And honestly? I don't even know which specific comic they were based on, but the whole thing just felt pretty stupid.

Sin City is actually based on the comic series of the same name, just like 300, and they translated it almost frame-for-frame to the screen. It was a brilliant adaptation. 🙏

Honestly, *Blade* is a pretty decent action flick. I wouldn't go so far as to say it’s some absolute masterpiece that changes the genre forever, but it definitely isn't a total train wreck either. It holds its own.

It is definitely not a disaster. That's exactly why I gave it a two.

The movie is just a movie. Not sure where to start:
1. Vampires using sunscreen and wearing helmets to resist the sun 👎>
2. That vampire disco scene where blood gets spilled for no reason 👎>
3. If Blade is such a fraud, how does Quinn manage to survive every encounter with him? Big fail:
4. The vampires themselves 👎>
5. Whistler 👍>
6. That scene where Whistler takes a life and then Blade just meditates before smashing that glass plant box 👍>
7. Blade shows up and Frost starts panicking:

9. Blade's whole look, including his sword 👍>
10. The fact that Blade and Whistler aren't the only hunters, and someone actually has to manufacture his ammo:

14. The ritual scene is a total flop:
15. Blade shooting the human mercenary even though the guy begs for mercy because he's just doing his job. The message: "You're either with us or against us" 👍>

Rating: 3/5. It's a decent way to kill some time, good for watching with friends, something you might revisit every few years.

Finally caught a screening last night.

It was... interesting. There were definitely moments where it felt like they were forcing the plot—just pushing way too hard—but then there were other parts that actually landed really well. Honestly, though? Those skeleton scenes were completely unnecessary... just felt out of place.

Blade is still a masterpiece... honestly, some people need to realize this isn't some deep Citizen Kane drama; it's an adaptation about a half-vampire hunting other vampires. Like, what else are you actually expecting from that premise besides a good time??!🤷🤷

Random thought... I still remember it like it was yesterday... right around Christmas in '98, me and a buddy were bored out of our minds... decided to hit the theater. We knew Snipes, so we figured let's go check out this Blade movie. We walked out of that theater absolutely stoked...

The movie was a total blast... everything from the action and direction to the fight choreography. My opinion hasn't changed one bit since then... I still enjoy it every single time...

And another thing... I always say Blade was basically The Matrix before The Matrix, because they shared so many similar vibes.
- You've got this whole hidden world existing "underneath" our own, which even Snipes calls out at one point: "You better wake up. The world you live in is just a sugar-coated topping! There is another world beneath it - the real world. And if you wanna survive it, you better learn to *pull the trigger!*"

- The characters also rocked the leather outfits and dark shades—the costumes were almost identical...

- Those cool fight sequences were super innovative for the time, using techniques that hadn't really been seen in a Hollywood movie before... then a year later, The Matrix offered the exact same thing...

- Bullet time... sure, maybe not as much as The Matrix leaned into it, but there was definitely a hint of bullet time in one scene...
