Bug bites or something else?

I was hiking through the Appalachian foothills last Sunday when I got stung by something—honestly, I haven't a clue what it was. There’s some redness about two inches wide and it's a bit tender. My doctor prescribed a course of Sumamed 500 mg (six tablets total) and some topical Bacitracin—any thoughts on this regimen?

It strikes me as well that we might be looking at a sting, perhaps something slightly more aggressive—maybe even a wasp?

On a separate note, I have come to believe that the insect population has grown quite erratic lately; I frequently discover bites on my own skin that are massive, reaching two or three centimeters in diameter, which initially swell significantly before hardening into a solid mass. These marks eventually fade after several days, or sometimes even longer, which is a truly bizarre phenomenon.

I strongly suggest you adhere strictly to whatever advice your physician provided, and if the itching becomes unbearable—though I suspect you already know this—for heaven's sake, do not scratch it! 😉

By the way, have you checked to ensure there isn't a stinger or some other debris lodged in the wound? Is the swelling beginning to subside at all?

On another note, I feel like bugs have gone absolutely rogue lately—I’ve been finding these massive bites on myself (nearly an inch wide) that swell up and then turn into these hard lumps. They eventually fade after a week or so. It's bizarre.

It isn't going down and there's no sign of a stinger... and it still hurts.

Perhaps you ought to consult a dermatologist, whether through a private practice or at a local hospital, because this situation demanded immediate attention—and if my understanding serves me correctly, you should have acted on this over a week ago.

Well, you definitely got hit with the overkill approach—both an antibiotic and an antihistamine. It’s possible you’re just super sensitive to certain insect bites, so taking an oral antihistamine might actually be a smart move, but you should probably still check in with your doctor to see what they think about the whole situation.

I’ve personally dealt with much worse redness and swelling from just a basic mosquito bite. Though, honestly, within a week, things really ought to start calming down a bit...
