Comatose state

I have several questions and I am hoping someone might be able to provide some meaningful insight. To be honest, I am quite concerned.
A colleague of mine was involved in a severe car accident about a month ago. He has been in a coma since then, and after being moved from the ICU last week, he is now in neurology. Now, the medical staff is suggesting he be transferred to a specialized rehabilitation facility in Palm Springs for therapy.
My concern lies in whether this move is truly beneficial for him. It would put him much further away from his family, and it is my understanding that patients in a coma rely heavily on the presence of familiar, loved ones.
He does respond to stimuli—he opens his eyes, squeezes hands when spoken to, and turns his head—but there is still significant swelling in his brain. We are all holding onto hope for his recovery because he is young and clearly fighting with everything he has.
So, the question remains: is this transfer to Palm Springs actually in his best interest, or is the hospital simply trying to clear a bed because the ward is overcrowded? I have heard that even at facilities like that, space is limited and they are likely just looking for any available opening.

If they think he needs a stay at Palm Springs, then he should go. You all can just come visit him there. It’s great news that his condition has stabilized. The brain needs time to heal, and you have to be patient and commit to a lot of physical therapy—which is exactly what he’ll get at a place like Palm Springs.

Well, his family could actually stay by his side almost constantly—meaning they can be with him all day long, except through the night—so he could have that essential support system right there with him.

Thomas Jackson9...I am wondering if I might be able to stay directly within the complex itself, or if I should plan on paying for separate accommodations? I am quite unsure of how this works. Thank goodness, I haven't known anyone else who has gone through a similar situation before.

Unfortunately, they really do have to cover their own lodging costs since there isn't a provision for paid stays, though they are allowed to spend the entire day by their side; once evening rolls around, they have to head out from the hospital, but even that feels like such a blessing—just having someone familiar there with them throughout the daylight hours can make such a massive difference.

Thank you, restlessbison20. I am uncertain regarding how long a patient is entitled to such treatment, or if it is primarily contingent upon their specific condition and a physician's recommendation. I am genuinely concerned that they might be discharged prematurely without completing this course.

Actually, I know someone who went through something similar—he was in a car accident about nine months ago and is still recovering at a specialized rehab center out in the suburbs of Denver. His mother has been right there by his side the whole time, staying in a local rental and, bless her heart, she's been quite emotional about it all, so she’s doing everything humanly possible to make his recovery easier. Now that he’s starting to turn a corner and feels a bit better than he did in those first few weeks, she’s even able to take him out for little walks in the park in his wheelchair in the afternoons, helping him work through his exercises herself, which I think is providing such a huge boost to his healing process.

Unfortunately, Dr. Miller informed me that the residents in Springfield will have to wait. He’s currently dealing with a persistent fever and just isn't stable right now. I honestly don't know what else to say or how this whole situation is going to resolve itself.
