Converting ADSL to Ethernet

Hi there,

So, I have an ADSL jack in my living room with a cable running through the wall directly into my bedroom. I’m looking for some advice on how to convert this into an Ethernet connection. Since I work from home, having a reliable setup would be a lifesaver—the Wi-Fi signal in that room is pretty weak, and frankly, I don't have the patience to mess around with Wi-Fi extenders when I could just utilize the wiring already tucked inside the walls.
I assume this should just be a matter of swapping out a few faceplates, right?

First thing you should probably do is pop that outlet cover off to see what kind of cable we're actually dealing with. If it's just some old-school 4-wire phone line, you're out of luck; if it's an 8-wire UTP setup, then maybe you're in. If the wires are tucked inside a conduit, there might be a chance to pull a new cable through, assuming the current one is just telephone wire.

Do you happen to know how one would actually crimp that? I'd be looking for a tutorial, but I'm mostly wondering if the process remains consistent regardless of where you are.

Even though there are 8 wires in the cable, 100BASE-TX only actually uses 4 of them.

I’m no expert on this stuff, but you've gotta run one wire to pins 1 and 2, then the other to 3 and 6. Pins 4, 5, 7, and 8 are just dead weight...

True, but those flat phone cables probably won't work since they aren't twisted pairs...

I guess you'd need crimping tools, unless you just swap out the phone jacks for Ethernet wall plates.

I'm pretty sure it has to be. Even the standard specs for phone lines call for twisted pair. I mean, can ADSL even function if the wires aren't twisted at all?
