CPU Upgrade Ideas?

A buddy of mine is running an old FM2 build—looks like an A4 4020 paired with an MSI A55M-E33 motherboard. He mostly plays League, but he’s hitting some lag spikes and wants an upgrade. I found an A8 6600 k for him, but I'm wondering if it's actually smart to drop a 100W TDP CPU onto such a low-end board? He’s using an MS Platinum v2 400W unit. Honestly, this budget rig wouldn't even be functional without that MS power supply 😬
Thoughts? If we swap the CPU and maybe the PSU, it shouldn't be a massive jump in power draw, right? The power supply should handle the motherboard just fine... though I'm not sure about the heat levels..

It’ll work, though I guess you might be pushing the stock cooler to its limit here. 😬 Especially if there aren't at least two fans in the case...

I haven't even seen the PC yet; I just asked him to send over some CPU-Z screenshots. Given how old this build is, I’m betting he doesn't have any. ☕
Well, whatever. If he actually buys something, we'll plug it in and see what the temps look like. Dealing with builds like this is such a headache.
Plus, he's running an APU with only a single stick of RAM. He's definitely going to need to pick up more.

I was almost about to post saying I’ve got an A8-6600K running on a similarly crappy board, but then I remembered I actually moved it over to another rig that uses this exact MSI motherboard 😁 It should run fine, though the cooler might be cutting it a bit close... You definitely want more RAM, too; when I popped in a second stick for dual channel, my FPS basically doubled...

Yeah, dual channel is a total game changer for an APU. The issue is he’s already running some sticks, but I think they're stuck at 1333 MHz. Should I suggest he runs XMP to hit at least 1600, then just grab another 1600 stick to match?

Maybe give it a shot. I'll try testing how it runs on my other PC with 4GB of RAM and single channel in the meantime, lol. But only if it isn't such a massive pain in the ass to set up 😁

There isn't much to tweak here—just pull out the old hardware, install the new stuff, and you're ready to game.😁 I'm genuinely curious to see how this performs and just how big the jump in speed actually is.

It's not about dealing with a sore shoulder, the real issue is getting LOL installed 😁
