My mom is 62 and needs surgery to repair a bladder prolapse using mesh. The doctors told her the recovery is going to be long and that it's a complicated procedure. They also mentioned she won't be able to lift anything heavier than about 5 pounds after the surgery—though maybe I’m exaggerating that bit slightly. She’s pretty devastated because she’s normally so active and always on the go, so the idea of being limited like this is hard for her. What hurts most is knowing she won't be able to pick up her grandkid or play around with them like she used to.
Has anyone here gone through something similar, or does anyone know what the actual day-to-day life looks like during recovery? Thanks to everyone who takes the time to reply.

Look, I’m definitely no medical expert or anything, but my friend’s mom actually had that surgery done and she feels absolutely fantastic now
Before the procedure, she couldn't even sneeze without worrying about it, but now? She's totally fine. And get this—she works as a nurse at a major hospital, so she's constantly lifting patients and doing all that heavy lifting, yet she hasn't run into any issues at all
It’s been about 3 years since her surgery

My mom went through a similar surgery right around that age. She bounced back pretty quickly at first, but then, about five or six years down the road, the whole issue just resurfaced. 😢

I feel so bad for her. Every single time someone brings up the surgery, she just starts tearing up... worrying about this and that. She’s always been the type to jump in and handle everything herself because she didn't have the patience to wait for my dad to help move a sofa or something. I really want to comfort her, but I'm honestly not sure how to go about it.

I know it’s tough on you, and honestly, it’s hard to find the right words to comfort her. Maybe try walking her through the "why" behind the surgery—focusing on all those daily struggles she’ll finally be able to leave behind once she recovers. I’m actually a little younger than your mom, and I have a friend who’s even younger than me; she went through a similar procedure about five or six years ago. She doesn't really like talking about it, but I know she dealt with some rough patches before things finally turned around. We actually caught up yesterday while she was out walking her dog, and she was telling me how sick her pup got—she ended up staying up all night looking after her, and the poor thing only weighs maybe fifteen pounds...
The doctor might just want her to take it easy for a little while, but once everything heals up properly, she should feel like herself again.
I’ll reach out to my friend and see if I can get more insight, but in the meantime, give your mom a huge hug from me. Tell her plenty of us here are thinking of her and sending nothing but good vibes her way.😘

So, I'm 48, and about five weeks back, I went under the knife for a bladder sling procedure. They got the tape all installed and everything. Honestly, I’ve been feeling pretty great overall—super positive about the recovery—but then this morning, I let out a sneeze and, well... a little bit of urine escaped. Just a tiny leak. Should I be stressing out about this, or is this just part of the deal?
