Every Wednesday night, a wealthy publisher named Pierre Brochat hosts a dinner party for a small group of friends. They have a bit of a twisted game: they compete to see who can invite the biggest "idiot." The whole point is to get these characters to ramble on about their bizarre obsessions and passions just so the hosts can get a good laugh, eventually crowning an "idiot of the evening."
While hunting for his next target, Pierre crosses paths with a tax auditor named Francois Pignon, a man who could talk for hours on end about his collection of matchstick sculptures. Under the guise of wanting to publish a book on the collection, Pierre invites him over for dinner, but right before the guests arrive, he's struck by such excruciating back pain that he's completely sidelined.
Instead of a sophisticated dinner party, he ends up stuck at home, at the mercy of an "idiot" who systematically dismantles his life, his marriage, his career, and even his relationship with his mistress, second by second!
The film won a Caesar Award and a Lumiere Award back in 1999.
