DIY CNC machine build

Hey everyone,

I was wondering if anyone here has ever actually built their own CNC machine from scratch? I’m looking for just about anything—blueprints, useful links, tutorials... basically, the more info the better!

Quick note for the mods.

It might be cool to open up a dedicated section of the forum for DIY builds and maker projects like this. I wanted to ask in another thread, but I didn't want to risk getting banned, so I figured I'd post here instead. There's tons of stuff for the IT crowd, but I have a feeling I'd get a Ban if I tried posting this over there.

I've worked extensively with mechanical systems—I'm a machinist by trade—but electronics isn't exactly my forte. My friend is an electrician, which helps, but I'm not certain that's enough to bridge the gap...

Where on earth did you get this ridiculous notion that you’re going to get banned just for posting a thread in the wrong section? Seriously? 😵
Look, you don't get banned for minor slip-ups. You get banned for actual offenses, or if you rack up a hundred strikes, which takes a massive amount of breaking small rules over time.

Just look at the DIY subforum. You aren't going to get banned for something like that. 👍

Man, I already caught some heat for posting about swapping my Eve accounts for WoW in the WoW subforum. Honestly? Whatever. Not a big deal if you ask me. As for the CNC build, I’m planning on putting together one with a work area of about 1.5x1.2m. I’ve actually got some blueprints ready to go, though I can't even open them yet because they're in some weird file format. A buddy of mine built a small CNC machine, so I'm thinking of modifying his design to scale up into something bigger. If anyone's interested, I can share what I've got, even though it's not much. That said, I was wondering if anyone here has experience with this kind of thing and could point me toward a solid, specific link.

Please, send over what you guys ended up building and give me a rough rundown of how to put together a DIY CNC machine. I stumbled upon this one, but the prices are absolutely insane. The only decent thing about them is the tutorials.

As for those files you can't identify, you'll likely need AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Autodesk Inventor to open them. Just Google "YOUR EXTENSION with added which program to open with"

I'm assuming it's one of those programs mentioned.
