DIY Smart Clock Box

Hey everyone. Does anyone remember that little old weather station display? You know, the one where an old lady with an umbrella would peek out during the rain, and some grandpa with a cane would stroll out when the sun was shining? I've got a similar little model here, but it's missing a part. I can't figure out what kind of lever used to push the lady out of the house—specifically, what kind of material expands when it gets damp?
