Dropbox issues

Hey, I could really use some help here,
So, I'm currently setting up Dropbox on all the computers and smartphones for everyone who needs access to certain files. I just uploaded an Excel spreadsheet to Dropbox, but now I'm stuck—how am I supposed to actually edit it?
Do I seriously have to download the file every single time I want to change something, then re-upload it to Dropbox just so everyone else can see the updates? Or is there a way to just fill it out online if the computer or phone already has the right software installed? I'm trying to make things faster for the crew out in the field—they need to be able to find the doc in Dropbox, plug in the data, and hit "save" so it automatically stays right where they found it...

Look, obviously you’re going to need some version of Microsoft Office—or at least some decent software capable of handling Excel and Word files—on every single one of those machines.

Honestly, Google Drive is just way better for that kind of stuff.

So, I was just sitting here thinking... why choose Dropbox over something like Google Drive? Or vice versa?

I mean, Google Drive actually comes with Microsoft Office integration too, so you can just whip up and edit docs right there. Dropbox doesn't really do that. Plus, Drive gives you 15 GB to play with, while Dropbox feels way stingier if you're just looking at the standard storage without hunting for some random promo or whatever.

Well, Google Drive comes with Microsoft Office integration, so you can pretty much build and edit docs right there. Dropbox doesn't really do that. Plus, Drive gives you 15 GB to play with, whereas Dropbox is way smaller if you're just looking at the standard free tier without any weird promos or whatever.

A lot of what you wrote doesn't make much sense.
It sounds like you've never dealt with this kind of software before.
Think of a Dropbox folder like an online hard drive. You open a file, edit it, and when you hit save, Dropbox handles the upload in the background.
The catch is that once one person opens a file, they basically take control of it. If two people try to edit the exact same file at the same time, Dropbox will just create a duplicate version to prevent data loss. It gets pretty messy if you have 30 people trying to hammer away at two or three documents simultaneously...

I was wondering, is there any way to set up some kind of mobile notification for whenever someone makes a change to one of the documents I'm using in Dropbox?
