I’ve been using this cloud service for several years now. I just set up a new account specifically for work purposes, and I noticed I was bumped up to 65 GB for free instead of the usual 50 GB.
Does anyone happen to know why this is happening? It would be incredibly helpful if I could somehow apply those extra gigabytes to my personal account too, since it's basically hitting its limit already.
If they’re handing out 65 GB for free now, I’d assume my older account should have seen an increase as well...
Or is this one of those gimmicks where they give you extra space just for installing the mobile app or the desktop client, only for it to expire after 30 days or something like that?
I remember there being some weird rule before where you'd technically have 50 GB, but you only really had 15 GB of usable space, and anything else would get wiped if nobody downloaded it within a month...

I tried searching online, but I can't find any clear answers.

Dropbox has been tweaking its free account policies for a while now, specifically since early 2018. They didn't apply these changes retroactively, though—people who opened their free accounts before the shift (myself included) still have their 50GB. Any newer account starts with 50GB, but that's just temporary; it eventually drops down to a permanent 15GB after a set amount of time. Here's how it breaks down:

15GB permanent + 35GB bonus for the first 30 days (signup bonus);
15GB permanent + 20GB bonus for 180 days via the Dropbox desktop app (desktop bonus);
15GB permanent + 15GB bonus for 180 days via the Dropbox mobile app (mobile bonus);
15GB permanent + 10GB bonus for 365 days by referring a friend who installs Dropbox.... link

Honestly, I had no clue. I've got two 50GB accounts and they haven't touched them yet. You currently have 15+35+15 (permanent, bonus, and the Dropbox desktop bonus).

Thanks. I suspect they only go after those bonus gigs if the files stay messy for an extended stretch. But obviously, just having the cloud installed on your PC is enough to count toward your activity levels.
