Every time I pop in a DVD, my computer just won't recognize it. It won't even spin up properly. Does anyone have any advice on what I should try next?

It’s most likely just a scratched DVDβ€”honestly, you’d be better off just picking up a new one for $33 and calling it a day πŸ™‚

Or are those DVDs just completely trashed?

Honestly, you might just want to grab a new drive since they're pretty cheap these days.

I forgot to mention that it doesn't even open consistently. It completely freezes my PC sometimes too. A buddy of mine just burned some CDs for me recently, so the discs themselves should be fine.

So, I realized today that my DVD drive has completely given up on me; whenever I pop a disc in, the little light flickers for a second and then just dies, leaving absolutely nothing to load. I don't actually use physical discs all that much since I mostly just download everything from the web, but it’s a massive headache because if I ever need to do a clean reinstall of Windows, I'm basically stuck. I tried searching on YouTube for some fixes regarding clearing out bad filters or whatever, but none of that worked, and to make matters worse, I ended up getting hit with a Blue Screen of Death. I managed to claw my way back from that using System Restore, but even after doing that, the drive is still totally unresponsive. The only time I’ve ever actually opened the case was once when a rubber band snapped and I had to put things back together, but it worked fine back then. I’ve double-checked all the connections and everything seems plugged in tight. If anyone out there has any idea how to fix this, please, I'd really appreciate the help. Honestly, the worst part is I can't tell if it's even worth opening up the tower to see if there's an obvious hardware issue or not, especially since the light still blinks when I open the tray, so I'm not entirely sure if the hardware is actually fried.

To’s not actually that big of a deal to begin withβ€”they aren't even all that pricey. You can usually find plenty of cheap options on eBay, regardless of whether you're looking for an ATA or SATA burner. Honestly, I don't think it's worth stressing out over too much. And as a second thing, if you're worried about how to handle the installation, you can always just run Windows from a USB drive.

It’s pretty obvious they’re broken if they aren't keeping up with any of the news outlets.
