DVD writer issues

Hey there...
So, I've got a Dell DVD writer sitting in my desktop rig running Windows 7 32-bit. Lately, I've been hitting a wall with burning discs—it keeps asking me for a firmware update.
Here’s the weird part: when I burn something using Nero 7, the process seems to finish perfectly. The drive says everything went fine, and if I look at the disc, you can actually see the data was written. But then, when I try to pop it back in to actually play it? Nothing. It acts like the disc is totally blank and keeps throwing an error message at me to format the disc.
Any idea what could be going on?

I just can't find any drivers or firmware for this specific model anywhere...

I don't recall the exact steps for Windows 7, but try searching for "device manager" in your search bar. Locate the DVD/CD-ROM drive, double-click it so the properties window pops up, and then double-click again. Go to the Drivers tab and select "Update Driver."
