So, there's this classic sci-fi masterpiece called Forbidden Planet, and get this—they're actually planning a remake soon!
I mean, we don't have a ton of juicy details yet, and nobody really knows when they might actually start shooting, but honestly? I feel like a remake of a cult sci-fi legend like this totally deserves its own spotlight.
The chatter about doing a remake has been swirling around since 2007, and back in 2008, Straczynski explained that the original had been his favorite science fiction film, and it gave Silver an idea for the new film that makes it... well, you know. He told Joel Silver that the movie shouldn't just be some "retro" throwback, especially since the original was so far ahead of its time back in the 1950s; instead, the new version should be super modern and packed with all those high-end sci-fi visuals we crave today.
Right now, though, it's anyone's guess who's going to be behind the camera or which big-name actors might show up in the cast, since no directors or stars have been officially linked to it yet. As of right now, the project is sitting firmly in "development," and if the current word is anything to go by, they're aiming to have everything wrapped up by 2013.

New Line Cinema had developed a remake with James Cameron, Nelson Gidding and Stirling Silliphant. In 2007, DreamWorks set up the project with David Twohy. Warner Bros. reacquired the rights the following year and on October 31, 2008, J. Michael Straczynski was announced as writing a remake. Joel Silver will produce. Straczynski explained that the original had been his favorite science fiction film, and it gave Silver an idea for the new film that makes it "not a remake", "not a reimagining", and "not exactly a prequel". His vision for the film will not be retro, because when the original was made it was meant to be futuristic. Straczynski met with people working in astrophysics, planetary geology and artificial intelligence to reinterpret the Krell back-story.

I'm totally with you on that—honestly, I still think the original Forbidden Planet from 1956 is one of the absolute best sci-fi movies ever made, even by today's standards! How does a movie from that era still hold up so incredibly well? It’s just a masterpiece.

I’m seriously crossing my fingers that this remake actually turns out great, you know? I really, truly hope we don't end up feeling totally let down by the whole thing after all the hype.

The original is basically the Roman Empire of cinema—it’s the gold standard for the whole genre.

By the way, wasn't the sequel supposed to drop back in 2011?
