Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022)

Glass Onion. It’s predictably similar to the Knives Out Mystery, but frankly, it doesn't improve upon it. To my mind, the characters in the previous film were far more compelling. They felt... more grounded.

The atmosphere in the first installment was far superior. This one isn't terrible, but the first one is definitely better.

Glass Onion is easily a 7 for me—actually, let's go with an 8 because it was just so much fun. It’s over two hours long but honestly, the time just flies by 👍

Which character from the sequel actually caught your interest?

Glass Onion, just like everyone else is saying, starts off strong—it holds its own until about halfway through—but then it totally falls apart when they decide to replay everything from the detective’s and the Black woman's perspective. That whole sequence dragged on way too long and was just too linear—we were basically just sitting there watching facts unfold, which killed any sense of tension or mystery. By the end of that loop, you already knew the deal: either all the billionaire's rich friends were in on it together, or the guy himself did it.

The ending itself was just... weird. I mean, realistically, what was stopping the billionaire from just taking out the detective, the Black woman, and anyone else standing in his way right then and there? Instead, he just stands there calmly watching his entire house burn down, thinking he's safe because nobody can prove he committed the murder. Or whatever.

And what was even the point of that one guy just hanging out on the sidelines the whole time? They could've used him for at least one tiny thing to help solve the case. And was that Hugh Grant cameo supposed to hint that the detective is gay? Maybe.

EDIT: Either way, the movie is better than New York City, which I guess was also just made because the first Knives Out was such a hit.

I find myself agreeing with Benjamin Stewart53 on this one; honestly, I don't think Glass Onion was really necessary.

Rian Johnson hasn't made a decent movie since Brick. Both of these works—basically budget Agatha Christie—have a few clever tricks up their sleeve, but that’s where they end. They're easy enough to watch, but you'll forget them immediately. The cameos from Hugh Grant and Ethan Hawke are just silly and unnecessary. The attempt at satirizing tech moguls, influencers, and MR activists is pure cringe.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't you watch Better Call Saul week after week despite constantly claiming it was terrible?

Other people's opinions on things that have nothing to do with you shouldn't bother you in an ideal world.

I am not the subject here, Grace Sanchez50. The subject is a movie I didn't particularly care for. It’s fine—a decent holiday flick if you just want to zone out. But after Brick, I expected much more from Rian Johnson. For me, this one didn't hit those heights. I'll still watch his stuff in the future because, aside from messing around with SW, none of his work is a total disaster.

I honestly don't see what's pretentious about using the term "cringe-inducing." I wasn't aware there was some age limit on which slang you're allowed to use.

Looper also had an interesting premise, but ultimately it was pretty mediocre. I rewatched it a few months ago, nearly ten years after my first viewing. It hasn't aged well at all.

It’s worse than the first one. The original actually built the case brick by brick. The story felt earned.👍
The murder doesn't even happen until ninety minutes in, and honestly, nothing much happens before that.
I knew the Black woman wasn't dead the second she hit the floor.☕I knew they were just going to use that to force the killer into the open.
I knew who did it from the start.
Destroying that napkin was just idiotic and predictable.
The victim was pointless. Just no substance.👎
I can't stand greasy Norton; I wanted to just knock him out at the beginning. That was the hope, anyway.☕
The only good part is the island. The house is a bit too eclectic for my taste—way too busy—but that garden, the beach, the pool...🙏The outfits are great, too.

I didn't even like the trailer, but I tried to give it a chance. It’s just overstretched.
The casting is fine, but they don't mesh. Especially Dave Bautista—looking all tattooed and tough—standing next to a literal supermodel.
Kate Hudson was good, even if her character is a complete idiot. That's just who she is.👍All that partying in her house felt totally unnecessary.

The opening of this movie is incredibly lackluster, the middle section manages to find its footing, and then the ending just leaves you wondering what on earth happened...

It’s easily twice as bad as the first installment.

It’s a pretty fun, unexpected spin on the whole classic whodunit setup. Instead of just cramming everyone into one room and having some genius pull a conclusion out of thin air—you know, how those movies usually go—Rian Johnson actually shows you the legwork behind the investigation. It was actually kind of refreshing... Unexpected, even. Honestly, the movie feels a bit weaker than the first one, but it's still a blast to watch.

The first one is totally overrated. Half the people on the posters are just cameos anyway.

I don't even care about the second one...

Madelyn Cline is seriously about to blow up after this movie... she’s such a talent 🙂

It’s a bit weaker than the first one, but still entertaining enough to sit through. Honestly, it’s a better Agatha Christie wannabe than the recent Poirot's entries.

Shoutout to that production house in LA, WIP, for doing most of the heavy lifting on this one. They’ve really been killing it with the CV so far.

It’s decent, though I suppose it falls just a hair short of the first one, even if it remains quite good.
It likely would have been perfect, but I found the ending somewhat lacking; I guess you could say there was perhaps one too many twists for my liking.
