Hayao Miyazaki

I'm curious... which Disney films—you know, the ones by the genius Hayao Miyazaki—have you guys actually sat through? And what's the verdict on his work?...

He's a genius, honestly—what else is there to say? 🙏

To be honest, I don't usually care much for anime, manga, or that kind of stuff—but Miyazaki is truly a master.

Japan, Japan... I'm with you on this one.

The only catch is that his films aren't exactly easy to track down, unless they were already nominated for an Oscar (or, you know, if you navigate the shady side of digital piracy—but let's pretend we're all staying strictly legal 😁)

That's just not true. You can find Studio Ghibli movies on the Internet just as easily as Disney or any other studio.

The only real issue here in the States is that so few of them are licensed, so there isn't much available to actually buy. (Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle—that's basically it 🤔 )

That isn't quite right. Whenever I order online here in the States, they're usually available. They're just incredibly pricey.

Does anyone know where I can find English subtitles for his older movies?

I managed to catch Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Porco Rosso, and My Neighbor Totoro back when they were actually playing in theaters... honestly, just incredible 😍

In the US, there are only licensed three of his films (plus Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind), and even then, those are mostly just the newer titles—and you can obviously order just about anything you want over the Internet... so yeah, you can.

They certainly are here in the States. Licensed. He only has three films (plus Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind), and they are all relatively recent titles. Plus, you can order just about anything online these days... so it’s definitely doable.

I was actually thinking about American online retailers, not just ordering everything from Amazon and such... but you make a fair point. I just checked Comic books, and it turns out very few of his films even have English subtitles.

Honestly, those specific online stores are kind of useless... it's not like you can't just order whatever you want over the Internet yourself. They tack on service fees that make the whole thing cost an absolute fortune. 😠 Then there's taxes, and this, and that.

Anyway, you can find all the licensed movies at Comic books; I'd assume they should carry them. Though, if you ask me, the only release worth having is "Steamboy," but that isn't even Miyazaki—it's Katsuhiro Otomo.😬

As for the others, from what I've heard from people who bought them, they aren't exactly great. Personally, Princess Mononoke is okay; I've got a copy at home. And they really should have Chihiro available at the local video rental shops.

I heard recently that there's a DVD for Howl, so maybe look for that in the video stores.

Ah, Princess Mononoke is honestly one of the most breathtaking pieces of animation I have ever laid eyes on; I absolutely adore that film. I used to own it on VHS, and I actually wore out the tape just from watching it so many times, but unfortunately, this local library's media collection doesn't seem to carry it 👎 ...
Chihiro is also such a fantastic film (though Haku remains my absolute favorite)

P. S. does anyone happen to know where I might find some high-resolution images of the Forest Spirit from Mononoke? That character is easily my favorite fantasy figure 😁

Does anyone happen to have a connection over at those shady neighbors of ours? A killer deal just popped up a few days ago: a DVD box set featuring Miyazaki's classics for about $5.50 (roughly $33). We're talking Spirited Away, The Cat Returns, Totoro, Castle in the Sky, and Porco Rosso.
Sure, if you're looking for extra goodies to go along with the box set, you're coming up empty—I mean, there's absolutely nothing included besides the discs themselves... but honestly, isn't that enough?

That sounds interesting... I might actually look for it next time I'm out that way.

I already own everything except "Nekonokashi" on DVD, but there's something better about having the originals. Besides, $10 is nothing; the last time I spent that much, it was just on some Turkish Delight. 😬

BTW, are these actual originals or just some cheap knockoffs? Do you happen to know how the picture, sound, and translation quality turned out?

Hayao Miyazaki is a total genius!
Compared to him, Disney is just unoriginal and predictable.
Disney's stuff doesn't even come close. 🙂

So, I was hunting for Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind on Isohunt the other day and stumbled upon this killer torrent. It’s a massive 5GB file that packs about 17 different anime titles into one go. I was specifically looking for Nausicaa, but the first thing that popped up was this "Studio Ghibli Anime" collection.
Almost everything in there is a Miyazaki masterpiece, aside from "Grave of the Fireflies" and maybe one or two others... but it’s got basically everything you’d want, including The Cat Returns and Lupin III.
If anyone’s into this stuff, go grab it...

I usually prefer having my collection on DVD, but since nobody seems to be releasing these anymore, I'm kind of stuck. What should I do? 🙂

Correction (on my part) - the whole file is actually over 11GB, and I'm grabbing about 5.7GB of movies I don't own yet...
