I honestly have no clue what’s causing this mess. I snapped a screenshot of my screen, but since the display itself is acting up, I had to transfer the file to my phone just to see what was actually happening:

The thing is, my monitor is basically trashed right now—whenever I fire up Google, the entire background turns this weird shade of pink instead of staying white. Everything looks completely glitched out:

This is what my Start menu looks like when I try to take a photo of the screen with my phone:

Just a minute before all this chaos started, my laptop was running perfectly fine; everything was totally normal and I’m positive there wasn't any malware or anything like that on the system.

First things first, try doing a clean reinstall of your graphics drivers. If you're still seeing the same issues after that, there's a good chance you're looking at a hardware failure—either the GPU itself is fried or it’s an issue with the display. It might be worth hooking up an external monitor using a VGA-DVI-HDMI cable just to see what kind of picture you get over there.

Broken screen, fried GPU driver, maybe even just a loose monitor cable... there's a million things that could be causing this mess.

So, I hooked my laptop up to the TV via HDMI and the picture looked totally fine on the big screen. Everything was running smooth, then I shut the lid, moved it to another room, opened it back up, and boom—this mess started happening. To be honest, this thing has been through the ringer; it’s been bumped around and dropped more times than I care to admit, but the screen never gave me grief before. This latest glitch didn't even come from a sudden impact; I’ve actually been pretty careful with it lately.

I originally bought this rig specifically for gaming, though let's be real, it’s barely even a gaming machine. It's an HP Pavilion, and the damn thing runs hot enough to fry an egg in seconds, making half my library unplayable. The warranty is long gone. So, what's the play here? Should I just bite the bullet and buy a new laptop, or is there any point in trying to fix this one? Specifically, which of those issues you guys mentioned would actually make a repair worth the cash versus just throwing money down a drain?

So looks like the monitor cable just wiggled loose inside the case. Just gotta pop it open and tighten things up... everything else seems fine 😁

Anyone know what kind of damage I'm looking at if I hand this laptop over to a tech to get it fixed?

And you should probably budget about $100-$$50 at a local repair shop—mostly because they’ll likely go ahead and swap out the thermal paste on the processor and give the whole laptop a deep cleaning while they have it open..

Did they cut the service rates?

On some laptops, you have to strip the whole thing down just to reach the connector. I wouldn’t touch that job for $50, sorry...

Some laptops need a total teardown just to reach the connectors. I wouldn't touch that job for $50, honestly...

Man, @taipan, when repair shops act like "robots" who just rip off poor customers without even explaining what's wrong 😁
Seriously though, when you pick up a laptop like that, there’s no sign anything was actually fixed (unless they leave a random screw left over, business as usual), so what are you actually paying for...
