I have a question, obviously.

If a man sleeps with a woman who has an STD, and he's using a condom while she happens to be having some light spotting... could he catch it? (Assuming, of course, that she actually has one)

Look, you aren't going to get a straight answer here—honestly, you probably won't get any real help at all since, from what I know, there aren't any infectious disease specialists hanging out on these forums... Some random person will tell you "yes," someone else will say "no," and they'll dump five or six links on you that’ll just leave you more confused than when you started after reading through them on WebMD.

Internet forums are just... they aren't the right place for questions like this, especially if you actually need an expert opinion.

Just go see a doctor.

If there's a chance of infection, you can actually get a dose of that antiretroviral cocktail—you know, those 3 or 4-drug combo therapies—within 24 hours....

I mean, nobody has officially proven exactly how much these injections actually help prevent a potential infection, but they still administer them (especially to medical workers, I think)...

I guess that's provided through something like Blue Cross Blue Shield...

First off, you have to distinguish between HIV and AIDS. You don't "get" AIDS; you get infected with the HIV virus, which can eventually progress into AIDS. Once someone is HIV positive, they stay that way for life. Even if we find a cure that prevents AIDS from developing—which hasn't happened yet—the virus stays in the system. Right now, we have cocktail therapies that keep the virus under control so symptoms never even show up. Basically, if you contract HIV, you'll live with it forever. The goal for future medicine is to find a way to stop the virus from overwhelming the body and turning into AIDS in the first place.
The answer is that infection isn't a guarantee. There was actually a story in the news recently about a woman whose husband kept his HIV status a secret from her for years. They have two kids and were intimate for a long time without her ever contracting it. She eventually sued him for not being honest. Some people are naturally resistant to the virus and just don't catch it, though those cases are definitely much rarer than the unlucky ones.

The odds of you catching HIV are incredibly slim, even if she actually has AIDS. Using a condom was definitely the right call. That said, if you're still spinning your wheels over it, just go get tested—if you're in Washington, D.C., head over to the Mayo Clinic.

Look, when "scientists" say condoms don't offer 100% protection, and then the box says the same thing, it’s just legal jargon. It's basically just the manufacturer covering their ass so they don't get sued. You can't be 100% sure about anything, especially this stuff. Just think about how much crap can actually leak through latex. Honestly, surgical gloves seem way more porous than a condom does.

Bottom line: you can get infected if you come into direct contact with someone's blood, and since it's her period, only you know if that happened.

Wait—you're still operating under the assumption that she's HIV positive?

Drop the theories and the statistics and just go get tested. Because if—God forbid—she does have the virus and you assume the condom did its job when it actually didn't, you'll think everything is fine while you're unknowingly passing it to someone else...🤔

This isn't something to joke about. I've known people who died from AIDS incredibly fast—all because they spent years carrying the virus without even knowing it.

The fact that she was bleeding definitely bumps up the risk of catching something. But then again, if the blood didn't actually "get in"—like, it just touched your skin and there weren't any cuts or anything—then I guess you can lean into that feeling of relief.
And about condoms... honestly, I don't think they're ever 100% foolproof, and I don't mean that like some shady legal loophole manufacturers use to dodge blame. I mean, I know plenty of people who used protection and still ended up dealing with something after nine months. If you can catch a pregnancy from a condom, you can catch anything else too...

Look, my gut says our "hero" didn't get infected, BUT TESTING IS NON-NEGOTIABLE!
