How do I optimize my PC for best performance?

My sister just picked up a "Dell Inspiron 1501" with these specs:
-Windows 7
-1.6 GHz CPU
-1 GB RAM

The thing is incredibly sluggish—windows take forever to pop up and browsing the web feels like pulling teeth. I'm no tech expert, but I'm guessing the limited memory is the primary culprit here.
Now, I know the immediate suggestion is usually to just go out and buy more RAM, but that isn't really an option right now.
She basically uses this machine for nothing more than checking and writing emails and the occasional trip to a website. That's the extent of it.
I've heard there might be ways to squeeze a bit more performance out of a system by disabling certain background processes or features that tend to bog down Windows. If anyone has the patience to suggest some tweaks to help us get the absolute most out of this specific setup, I’d certainly appreciate the help.

Look, that setup is strictly for running Windows XP with all the bells and whistles turned off (Adjust for best performance). You can't even dream of running Windows 7 on this.

I mean, look—some genius decided to wipe a perfectly functional Windows XP setup and install Windows 7 instead, even though the old OS was running flawlessly.
The real headache, though, is that the Windows XP installation discs are long gone, and I can't find a single compatible driver to save my life.
So, it is what it is—does anyone have any suggestions on how to at least speed things up a bit on this version of Windows?

What do you mean there aren't any drivers? You can just grab them right from Dell's website. They should have them available for Windows XP.

How do you mean there aren't any drivers? Here's the deal: they haven't officially released any for Windows 7, and there's a good reason for that. This laptop needs to go back to XP. Grab these drivers and put them on a USB drive—or at least do that with the network driver first. Then install XP, use that driver to get online, download the rest, and you're done.

I honestly don't think there's any way around this without bumping that memory up to 2 GB.

Even with the lighter 32-bit version of Windows 7, you're looking at a 2 GB requirement just to get by.

If someone went ahead and installed the 64-bit version, things are actually much worse—that setup really wants 4 GB of RAM.

My best advice? Just pop a 1GB stick into that empty slot and stick with the 32-bit version. It’s probably your best bet. 😐😐😐☕

That’s a massive hurdle when everyone has high-speed internet these days. An installation for Windows XP is only about 700 megabytes.

Honestly, Microsoft is the one really screwing us over regarding XP. If you're just using it for home use, any standard XP copy from a torrent site will be more than enough.
