Is The Hobbit being made?

Looking to ride the wave of their massive Lord of the Rings films success—since ROTK is basically a guaranteed hit—AMC Theatres is hunting for a way to get The Hobbit on the big screen. But according to The Wall Street Journal, there’s a massive roadblock: the Tolkien Estate. It looks like Tolkien's heirs, who already gave Peter Jackson a hard time by blocking the Rings museum in Wellington, are now standing in the way of a Lord of the Rings prequel.

"The difficulty everybody has is the Tolkien estate," Jackson noted, pointing to the ongoing friction between New Line and Christopher Tolkien. Jackson is busy with King Kong right now, aiming for a 2006 wrap date. Afterwards, Jackson would like to work with New Line on The Hobbit, assuming the lawyers can stop fighting long enough to sign something.

A deal feels far off. The whole trilogy only exists because J. R. R. Tolkien himself sold those film rights in 1969 for $10,000—pennies compared to what they're worth now. His son, Christopher, isn't convinced that The Hobbit or Any of his father's other works Can be adequately represented on-screen, and he's been dragging his feet on backing the current Lord of the Rings Project. 😢

In other News, however, anticipation for The Return of The King hit New heights this Week with The movie's official premiere in New Zealand. As many as 100,000 fans showed up to cheer on a Lord of the Rings parade. The screening was a closed event, so people in Wellington have to wait just like everyone else. All reports suggest that The Return of The King is everything we've been waiting for. We'll have more updates and a full review soon.

I’d love to see The Hobbit happen, but this looks messy.
If Tolkien hadn't sold those LOTR rights, we wouldn't even have these movies. Just a thought.

There was some chatter going around about that, but I honestly can't tell you what they finally decided on.

It really would be a great idea to get them on film. That would be absolutely stellar.

I was reading in the paper a couple of weeks ago that Jackson has decided he wants to film it too, so now they just need to iron out the details...😁

It’ll be fine... if they really want to, they can just throw him into the sequels like they did with Santa Barbara, then everyone still gets to see him...

The whole copyright situation is still such a mess right now, so I honestly can't say for sure whether they'll even move forward with filming the project.

I honestly hope Jackson doesn't pull some stupid stunt like that.
The Hobbit is one of the few places left where old-school Tolkien fans can actually escape the hordes of "superfans" running around with mindless grins and Legolas posters in their hands.

Look, the LOTR films are visual masterpieces, and there's a real chance the Hobbit could be just as stunning; personally, I'm dying to see him tackle it.
If you were a genuine fan of the books and Tolkien's work, you aren't going to stop being one just because of a movie. If you haven't read them, maybe this will finally push you to pick up a book. And for those who just live to act superior? Well, they'll find something else to look down on, whether it's the Hobbit or not. They'll find it in tantra, Hemingway, a red Marlboro, or even punk and Attack. It doesn't matter.

And how on earth are we women supposed to cope without Legolas?!? They really ought to find some way to squeeze him into the movie. 😁

First, he flatly denied any chance of him directing it. He claimed he’d be more than happy to grab some popcorn and catch it in a theater, but there was no way he was working on it. Then, suddenly, barely a month ago, he’s saying he wants to take the helm.

Why are you all so preoccupied with the idea that a sudden influx of commercialized fans—people who likely haven't even cracked the spine of the book—is about to descend upon us?

I find the prospect of a new film production somewhat tiresome, yet I suppose it matters little. The book remains the superior work.

It’s all going to be filmed eventually, provided everything stays on track... It looks like Peter Jackson is gearing up for a King Kong remake, and once that's out of the way, he'll presumably move on to the hobbit...
There’s currently this ongoing tug-of-war happening between New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. over who actually holds the rights to the hobbit... but I suppose they'll have it all sorted out by the time PJ wraps up King Kong. 🙂

Word is out that they're planning to film the hobbit movie once Jackson wraps up his King Kong remake. And honestly—even if they do get the hobbit project moving—true Tolkien fans will still be hungry for another masterpiece: Middle-earth. Personally? I highly doubt anyone will ever actually step up to take on the job of filming that one.

Oh, they absolutely will! If necessary, I’ll personally drag Jackson kicking and screaming until he adapts every single thing Tolkien ever wrote, just so I can watch die-hard Tolkien fanatics scream and collapse in the streets because the movies aren't 100% perfectly, cosmically faithful to the books—or because you don't know fluent Sindarin or some secret dwarven handshake to be allowed in the theater.
Maybe they'll start their own little terrorist cell called S. N. O. while wearing spandex and nose rings, hunting people down and making them die of pure laughter at how ridiculous they look.
