Hey,

I need some help. My USB mouse is acting up randomly. For instance, when an error pops up in Call of Duty: Black Ops II, the mouse starts stuttering, lagging, or just dies completely—like it’s lost power entirely. Unplugging it and plugging it back in fixes it temporarily until the next glitch hits, which could be anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours later. I haven't found a pattern yet. Swapping USB ports didn't do anything, but I did find a potential clue in the Event Viewer.

I noticed this specific error keeps popping up whenever the mouse glitches out, or even when I'm just plugging/unplugging other USB devices.

"Metadata staging failed, result={00000000-0000-0000-FFFF-FFFFFFFFFFFF} for container '0x80070490'"

"Metadata staging failed, result={056018F3-EA11-DE01-11C1-516050C076BC} for container '0x80070490'"

The common thread in all these errors is "for container '0x80070490'".

Here are my system specs:

MOBO: MSI H170 GAMING M3
GPU: GIGABYTE R9 390 G1 GAMING
RAM: Vengeance DDR4 2133 mhz 2X8
PSU: XFX 750W XXX Edition, Single rail, Semi modular
CPU i5-6600 3.30GHz, s1151, Box, NVIDIA GeForce GT 730

All drivers are up to date via CCleaner.
The full Event Viewer logs are available here:

Thanks in advance for any help!

I did some digging and figured out what’s going on. These error messages are basically noise; it turns out macOS is just hunting for drivers for software that doesn't have them pre-installed. When it fails to find one—like it did here—it spits out that "0x80070490" error code.

It's a known issue where mice or keyboards glitch out when they're plugged into a USB 3.0 port.
