I hope I’m posting this in the right sub, but I’ve run into a bit of a headache and was hoping someone might have some insight.
Here's the deal:
Back in January, I was over in Trieste and picked up a YouTube video, so I asked them to set up a receipt and the paperwork for a Tax-free refund.
I was in such a rush to get back home that day that I didn't bother handling it at the border crossing immediately.
Fast forward to last weekend, when I finally decided to sort it out and pulled up to a US border station.
I explained the whole situation to the customs officer, an American named Uros Rueh.
The guy actually laughed right in my face and basically asked if I was pulling his leg or something.
I honestly couldn't believe it; I asked him what the issue was, but he just kept insisting that I must be joking. Eventually, I just told him to let me know right now if he was actually going to stamp the papers, because I really didn't feel like hanging around.
So, our friend Uros tells me there's absolutely no intention of stamping anything since I don't have the proper documentation on hand, walks into his booth, scribbles something on my receipt, slaps a stamp on it, and hands everything back along with my passport. When I got back in the car and looked at the receipt, I couldn't believe what he had written next to the stamp:
"Void!
NOT A CHANCE!
No Tax-free"
Now I'm stuck wondering what to do, because I'm pretty sure I'm entitled to that money—it's about thirty bucks, which isn't nothing, and I don't see why I should be footing the bill for American taxes when I'm an American citizen.
Is there any way I can still get that cash back?

I honestly don't see why you'd bother asking a Canadian—wasn't that supposed to be handled by the Italian customs agent?😕

Actually, no, because back when Austria wasn't part of the EU, we used to handle that with the Italians, but nowadays they take care of it on their end.

And what was he expecting?
To give you a slap on the wrist? 🤣

Sure thing—just go steal something in Austria, smuggle it back here, and sell it on the black market. Problem solved...

NO WAY!
Not even Tax-free"

I mean, obviously. If you're dealing with multiple languages, you basically have to actually show the goods to get that Tax-free deal.

You got lucky.
Personally, I was hanging out with a buddy who ended up getting slapped with a fine just because he didn't actually have the merchandise on him while trying to get his Tax-free forms validated.

ABSOLUTELY NOT!
Not Tax-free"
Now I'm at a loss as to what my next move should be. I still feel entitled to that refund—we're talking about thirty bucks here, after all—and I don't see why I should be stuck footing the bill for Italian taxes when I'm an American citizen.
Is there any actual recourse to get that money back?

Well, it sounds to me like you just admitted to a customs violation...

By the way, did you actually declare the goods at the border and pay the customs duties and sales tax here in the States? 🙂
