John Wick (2008)

This is a sequel to what I'd actually call a cult classic martial arts flick from 2003—one of those rare movies that breathed some life back into that whole stale 80s genre. A teaser was just shown at Sundance, and honestly, people are losing their minds over how good it looks. The promo for this that was on display in Sundance is absolutely spectacular - very well shot, loaded with action in a huge range of styles, and surprisingly bloody. Unless it’s let down by the script this will be truly incredible. People are already saying things like like The Matrix mixed with a little hard core Mad Max action. You can check out the hype for yourself at the link below. The wild part? The lead star, Jackie Chan, is actually directing this one. Supposedly, the story has zero connection to the original besides the title, so calling it John Wick is a bit weird. The production has been a total mess lately, too; word is Jackie Chan walked off set to go meditate in the jungle (?) and they blew way past their $3 million budget, causing massive headaches. He’s since come back, apologized to the crew, and is finishing it up with help from his mentor, James Cameron, who worked with him on the original John Wick and Spicy Shrimp Soup. An American premiere is slated for December, which means we should see it hitting theaters globally sometime in early 2009. Here’s the lowdown...

PLOT

I suppose if this turns out to be even half as decent as the first one, it’ll definitely be worth checking out.

Part one was absolutely killer. The action choreography and those moves were just on another level. I really hope they don't totally screw up the sequel

Just finished watching it. Looks pretty damn interesting 😁. We should all just link up and fly out to Thailand for the premiere, lol. Hopefully it hits US theaters soon...

That promo looks absolutely insane... I’ve got a feeling we're in for non-stop, back-to-back chaos once this kicks off. Personally, I'm totally down for 😁

Man, this put me in such a good mood. I missed this thread because I was distracted by all those stupid monthly subscriptions. This looks incredible, seriously uplifting. Even seeing Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan in their prime together makes them look totally inferior compared to this guy. Tony Jaa is a straight-up god

But wait, how do they not have any connection? Like, the original versus this sequel? Tony Jaa plays the same character from the first one. Maybe this is some kind of prequel?... 🤔

Great, sure, but "better" is a stretch...☕

Look, we could go on forever about this because Donnie is a legit fighter. He knows his way around a dozen different styles and brings so much charisma to the screen. What I really respect is how he pushes for fight choreography that actually feels raw and real... definitely check out his last two flicks if you haven't yet.

That's mostly just due to the international success of the first movie. The original and this sequel aren't connected in any meaningful way. Aside from the heavy action sequences and the lead actor, there's no link. 🙂

Here’s the full synopsis for the sequel...

Quote : set in the era of King Henry VIII, Tien, a man who was born into nobility but had it stripped from him after his parents were brutally murdered. During his childhood Tien learned Khon, a form of dance which is usually reserved for royalty. Although he didn't know it yet, Khon would later prove to be an invaluable aide to him. After seeing his parents murdered AT the tender age of 10, Tien is forced to live on the streets where he is eventually captured by a group of thieves who take him in and teach him how to steal and fight. Tien's expertise as a thief and fighter grows and it isn't long before he is made head thief. Then Tien sees something that makes his stomach churn. A competition is being held to find the best knights to serve under the very man who had killed Tien's parents all those years ago. Tien passes the tests easily and is made Lord Rachasana's 2nd Knight. Now, he has his opportunity to strike but he will have to use all his skill and ingenuity if he is going to get his revenge on the man who killed his parents.

So, the "sequel" is actually a prequel set before the original movie...it doesn't follow the first one chronologically.

Yup... apparently the second one was such a massive hit in America that they've already greenlit a third...

I actually picked up the first part a few months back, but I haven't gotten around to watching it yet. I feel kind of bad about it...
