So, I've run into a bit of a situation... Basically, I usually DJ small local parties around my town, but this Saturday I'm stepping up to host a karaoke night. Since I've never actually done this before, I could really use some advice, experiences, or even just some solid recommendations.
Here's the setup... I've got a laptop, a killer sound system, a projector to display the lyrics, and a mic... My main headache is that I have zero clue which software to use—and I'm still scratching my head over whether I can just use standard MP3s or if there's some specific karaoke file format I need to hunt down. If anyone could point me in the right direction, I'd be super grateful!!!

Are you working with MIDI files or karaoke tracks? If you want to actually hear them properly, use Van Basco’s. Honestly, if your sound setup is kind of budget, just install Wingoove and set it as your main output. You basically route the audio from Van Basco through Wingoove before it hits your speakers. It works because the driver simulates high-end sound cards, giving you a quality that sounds almost identical to the real deal...
You can find MP3 versions that are just vocals or instrumentals, but I have no clue how you’d handle the lyrics that way. More importantly, though—performing karaoke publicly without owning the tracks or having a license is illegal. Seriously, you could get absolutely wrecked by this. You're looking at massive fines if you get caught. Just for context, check out this site with a massive karaoke database or this specific page
.
I’m telling you this for your own good. Those sites were just examples to show you what's out there, because playing unlicensed music in public is a serious offense. Think about it: a single MIDI file goes for about ten bucks, and it takes someone over 24 hours of straight work to produce one. It's a huge business. Anyway, let me know if you run into any more trouble.

Alright, I finally wrapped up the karaoke night. Can confirm—everything went smooth as silk. It ended up taking way more weeks than I initially planned out, though... I pulled together a massive collection of about 1,400 tracks and just ran the whole thing through Spotify. All in all, it was a total blast—already got another karaoke party on the books for this fall!
