Kid Cannabis (2014)

With all the garbage movies flooding theaters lately—usually just big-name stars coasting through mediocre scripts like in >—it’s rare to find a gem. This one actually kept me hooked. It was tense, engaging right up to the end, and featured a cast of totally unknown young actors who absolutely crushed their roles.

It reminds me of that old saying from a famous director about how there are "250,000 incredible actors in America."

And honestly? He's right.

Also, worth noting: the movie is based on a true story, which definitely grabbed my attention from the jump.

6.5/10

An eighteen-year-old high school dropout and his twenty-seven-year-old friend start trafficking marijuana across the Canadian border to make some quick cash, and their lives are changed forever.

We checked it out yesterday since it was the only place working for us, but honestly? It’s just a mediocre setup. A totally uninspired story that we've seen a thousand times before. There were a few decent laughs, mostly from how bad the "true story" copies felt compared to actual Spielberg films. 5/10

Look, if you honestly think this is just some "mediocre effort," then please, enlighten me—tell me what actually qualifies as top-tier in your book. This movie isn't a masterpiece, sure, but calling it average? No way. There’s so much trash being pumped out lately that Kid Cannabis has basically become the gold standard for the masses (look at Transcendence, Noah...), yet they don't put even a fraction of the effort into these compared to the stuff we're talking about here.

I’d go as far as to say it sits right up there with Jack Strong (2014). Both feel real. Both are based on true stories. They’ve got substance, they get straight to the point without all the unnecessary philosophical fluff, and they keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.

If I’m remembering right, you were all over the other boards saying this was the absolute best movie of the year, then I pop in here and see you gave it a mid rating
Who are you kidding?

Stop trolling.

Kid Cannabis and Jack Strong are easily two of the best movies out this year. But since you're just a troll, you clearly can't wrap your head around the fact that even amidst all the garbage you obsess over—like The Expendables 3 and stuff like that—you can still find a masterpiece with an above-average rating.

Mediocre 😁

As soon as you start hyping up a movie, I'm already skipping it.

Stop trolling. Nobody’s forcing you to be here, especially not in my thread. Just stay out of my way when I start a topic—your posts are just cluttering up the middle of the conversation. Go watch some low-budget B-movie trash instead. That’s clearly your level of intellect and artistic taste.

Kid Cannabis and Jack Strong are two of the best films this year. It’s just typical of a troll like you to be unable to grasp that even amidst the absolute garbage you worship (like The Expendables 3, etc...), a movie can actually be top-tier despite having a rating that's only slightly above average.

And my ass if that's one of the better movies of the year. The Grand Budapest Hotel absolutely destroys it. You saying it was "cheaply" made means nothing to me—congrats, really—but why on earth would I care?

The plot has been done a hundred times already. Only Scorsese films based on true events contain anything remotely similar to this (and obviously, they do it a hundred times better). The acting is sub-par, and it's honestly pathetic how much it tries to be funny—it's laughably bad when that heavy guy starts acting like a badass and bullying that other kid.

You clearly don't get movies at all. Seriously, you're way off base. Your critique is a total void—just as empty as your taste in films.

Saying The Grand Budapest Hotel outshines this is basically an entry for some "Worst of the Year" list in a trashy tabloid. This movie is absolute garbage, but we're talking heavyweight junk here. If that's your idea of a good film, there's really no point in even arguing with you.

And saying the acting is subpar? That’s just another massive fail. As for the plot not being "seen a hundred times"—well, at least I haven't seen it that often, but that's beside the point. Please, enlighten me. Name a single movie where the plot is as overdone as Kid Cannabis. Go ahead, I'm waiting.

By the way, Scorsese—the guy you're hiding behind to mask your own ignorance and insecurity—only made Casino, which was worth a look. That's it. Even Goodfellas isn't even in that league. Not even close.

That scene you find "laughably illogical"? It actually makes sense. It's possible. What's the issue? An Asian guy ran when someone armed stood up to him; until then, he was acting like a tough guy charging at unarmed kids with a gun.

It honestly gives me the creeps seeing someone reply to my posts. It's just going to be ignorant people, liars, and trolls from here on out.

Long story short, if you're involved, it's too much.

Sean Johnson40 said:You clearly don't know the first thing about movies. Seriously, your critique is a total coma—completely empty, much like your taste in cinema.

Claiming that The Grand Budapest Hotel is better is basically an entry for a "Greatest Sh*ts of the Year" list. That movie is absolute garbage, but heavy-duty, top-tier garbage. If you actually think it's good, there’s honestly no point in even trying to have a discussion with you.

And saying the acting is mediocre is just another massive fail, as is claiming the plot isn't "seen a hundred times." At least I haven't seen it that many times—not even close—but that’s irrelevant. Please, enlighten me: name some movies where the plot is as overused as Kid Cannabis. I'm waiting.

By the way, Scorsese—whom you're hiding behind to mask your own ignorance and insecurity—only made Casino, which is worth mentioning. And that's it. Even Goodfellas isn't on that level. Not even close.

It honestly gives me the chills when I see someone has replied to my post. It’s just going to be ignorant people, frauds, and trolls all the way down.

Long story short, if it's coming from you, it's too much.

Go ahead, tell me Kid Cannabis is better than Goodfellas too. 🤣 🤣

Look, that whole trope of a guy rising from nothing, living a wild life, and then crashing? We've seen it a hundred times. Look at Vuks from Wall Street. 🤷

Fine. You think GBH is trash, I think Kid Cannabis is trash. Different tastes, nothing to debate there. We can just look at reviews to figure out who actually has better taste. ☕

So Scorsese only made Casino? Since I clearly haven't read enough stupidity today, please, lay it out for me. Taxi Driver, Street of Evil, King of Comedy, after Houers... all useless, apparently. But Kid Cannabis? I have no idea what you were consuming back then, because cannabis definitely isn't enough to make this crap the movie of the year.

Noah Roberts46 said:Don't even get me started. You're telling me KC is actually better than Goodfellas? Seriously? 🤣🤣

Look, we've seen this story a thousand times already. Some guy rises from nothing, lives a wild, chaotic life, and then hits rock bottom. It's a classic trope. Just look at Vuks over on Wall Street. 🤷

A hundred times? I mean, looking at what you wrote, you really only focused on one guy. And honestly, I don't see the connection. This kid started from the absolute bottom. He was out there delivering pizzas just to scrape together enough cash for a computer. Then he crossed the border into Canada just to pick up some low-grade weed to flip for a quick profit—maybe a few hundred or a couple thousand bucks. That’s his whole story.

In *Wolf of Wall Street*, they crank everything up to eleven. His first gig was on Wall Street working alongside actual millionaires, mentored by a total shark. Then he goes rogue. We're talking hundreds of millions of dollars. He’s buying up the most expensive real estate on Long Island, dating the most beautiful woman in the country, and living that life with private butlers, luxury yachts, and racehorses. Even the helicopter landing right in his backyard? Yeah, the parallels are impossible to ignore.

And which other movie did you say had a plot just as repetitive as Kid Cannabis?

Noah Roberts46 said:Look, you think GBH is trash, I think KC is trash. It’s just different tastes. Nothing to argue about. We can just look at the reviews and see who actually knows what they're talking about. ☕

Reviews? Seriously? Your posts are just empty filler. You twist the truth before you even get started, and then you deliver these dry, soulless summaries that lack any actual substance. Reading your takes feels like being back in elementary school, desperately copying book reports from that one classmate who clearly struggled with reading comprehension as much as you struggle with film criticism. I remember my teacher catching me doing exactly that once; she looked me dead in the eye and asked, "Who are you copying this from?" That is precisely how your so-called "professional reviews" sound. Honestly, I think an elementary school teacher would give you a failing grade for this stuff.

Noah Roberts46 said:Scorsese only has Casino. I mean, if I haven't read enough nonsense to see what's right in front of me, then I'm just being dense. It’s embarrassing. Taxi Driver, Street of Evil, King of Comedy, After Houers... they all feel like total garbage compared to this. But Kid Cannabis? Seriously, I have to wonder what you were smoking back then, because there is no way some cannabis was enough to make this crap the movie of the year.

Scorsese can make whatever he wants, and you can worship him all you like if you think sucking up to a bunch of trolls and liars here is going to make you some kind of film expert. But let’s be real: the only one of his movies that actually earns the title of masterpiece is Casino. Just one. Goodfellas isn't a bad movie, but it doesn't touch the artistic level of Casino.

And stop putting words in my mouth. If you don't have an argument, don't resort to insults. I never said those movies were total garbage, nor did I compare them to Kid Cannabis. Since you're clearly such a genius judging me—acting like I'm high just because I called Jack Strong and those others the best films of the year (though Draft Day took the lead yesterday, by the way)—why don't you finally speak up? Tell me which movie was actually better this year.

Oh right, you're talking about that pile of heavyweight trash, The Grand Budapest Hotel, aren't you?

Honestly, even coming from you, this is too much. Seriously...

Sean Johnson40 said:A hundred times? Seriously? From what I can see, you only listed one guy, and honestly, the similarities just aren't there. This kid started at the absolute bottom of the barrel. He was out there delivering pizzas just to afford a computer, then he ended up crossing the border into Canada to pick up some cheap weed just to flip it for a quick buck—maybe a few hundred or a couple thousand dollars. That's a far cry from anything else you mentioned.

Scorsese can make whatever he wants, and you can worship at his altar all you like if you think sucking up to him among a bunch of trolls and liars is going to earn you some kind of "film expert" status around here. But let’s get one thing straight: the only film of his that actually deserves the title of masterpiece is Casino. Just one. And that’s it. Don't get me wrong, Goodfellas isn't a bad movie, but it doesn't touch the artistic level of Casino.

Don't you dare put words in my mouth. If you can't back up your claims with actual arguments, there’s no need to resort to insults. I never once said those movies were garbage, nor did I compare them to Kid Cannabis. You seem to think you're some kind of genius, judging me and acting high and mighty, when all I did was name Jack Strong and Draft Day as my top picks for the year so far. So, since you're clearly the expert here, why don't you finally weigh in? Tell me which movie you actually think has been better this year.

Oh right, that pile of heavyweight garbage—The Grand Budapest Hotel, isn't it?

I mean, seriously—if even you think this is going too far, then we’ve officially hit rock bottom. Truly.

Look, it’s all the same story to me. Sure, there might be a different level of scale here, but the core point remains unchanged. The guy built his empire on crime—it doesn't really matter how many billions are on the line. If you look at *Goodfellas* or *Scarface*, they follow the exact same trajectory. You have a guy starting from nothing, clawing his way to the top through illegal means, hitting that peak, and then inevitably crashing and burning. What’s actually new about this? I don't feel like scrolling through endless lists, but those are the first movies that come to mind.

Look, reviews are reviews, and the consensus is pretty clear: KC is just an average edit. I honestly don't get why you're attacking me or playing defense for this movie. To me, GBH is a much more high-quality, engaging film. What am I supposed to do? Just change my mind to match yours?

Do I really need some fancy "film expert" title on this forum? Honestly, I live for this stuff. 🤣
Look, I’m no film critic, I’m just commenting on what I’ve watched—that’s what this forum is for, isn't it? Honestly, Goodfellas is better than Casino, and you’re one of the few people out there who actually thinks otherwise. It’s faster, more dynamic, and way more engaging. Plus, it paved the way for the genre. Casino is high quality and beautifully shot, sure, but at the end of the day, it feels like a retread.

It’s honestly laughable to claim that Casino is Scorsese's only masterpiece. He has produced far superior films than that one, so unless you've actually sat through his better work, keep your commentary to yourself. I genuinely don't see how anyone could argue Casino holds more weight than Taxi Driver. 🙄

It’s obvious we’re never going to see eye to eye on this. Everyone can just stick to their own lane—there’s really no point in continuing this discussion.

3/10. Like I said before, it’s a pretty short walk from being a degenerate kid playing with dice and drinking too much wine to becoming some kind of cocaine kingpin. The theme feels a bit recycled. Plus, the guy is just a loud, annoying heavy-set dude.
