I’m a total amateur when it comes to this kind of stuff, so bear with me.

I've got this three-year-old Samsung laptop, and honestly, it's been a dream—never given me a single headache until now.

But over the last few days, it keeps just... shutting down on its own, and I've noticed it's running way hotter than usual.

I guess you guys might know, but do you think those two things are actually connected?

Because once it forces itself off, the next time I try to boot it up, it takes forever and just sits there saying

Update your system (0-100%)

It sounds like you're dealing with a combination of dust buildup and some Windows issues. Honestly, if you aren't super comfortable cleaning out the dust or swapping out the thermal paste on a laptop—which can be a bit tricky—it might be worth just dropping it off at a local repair shop. As for that "update your system" message? It’s most likely just a standard Windows update or maybe an invitation to move over to Windows 10.
