I used to just put my laptop to sleep every night and call it a day. Lately, though, I’ve been hearing this weird humming sound around 5 or 6 in the morning... It’s enough to wake me up from a dead sleep.

Does anyone have a clue what that might be or why it's happening? Is it smarter to just shut the thing down completely every single evening??

thanks

Oh, absolutely—it would definitely be a much better move if you just shut it down every single night.

Care to explain? Is there some looming catastrophe if I don't kill the power completely?

Look, if everything is set up right and configured correctly, nothing bad should happen.
The whole thing really comes down to being certain that your settings are actually dialed in properly.
But honestly, the fact that you’re even asking this here tells me you aren't quite sure about your setup.

As for what could actually go sideways, that depends entirely on what exactly isn't working or which specific setting on that laptop is off.

So, I just inherited this absolute relic of a laptop, and man, it is painfully slow—like, watching paint dry would be a high-speed chase by comparison. There’s basically nothing on it, just running Windows 7, and even though I went through the whole ritual of cranking every single setting down to the bare minimum to save some juice, it’s still crawling along like it's stuck in molasses.

It's running on a single-core processor—what exactly were you hoping for? Honestly, I wouldn't recommend installing Windows XP anymore either, since it's just too vulnerable to security risks these days. Maybe try grabbing Windows 7 Starter? It's probably the lightest version of Windows 7 out there. If you turn off all those visual effects and other unnecessary junk, you might actually see some improvement.
