Live traffic updates on Google Maps?

I've been watching the news all day—they’re showing live updates on the traffic situation over in San Francisco—but for some reason, I just can't get it to pull up on Google Maps through my browser
Does anyone happen to know anything about this? Any idea how I can actually get it to display for me?

Just hit that menu icon on the top left—you know, the one with the three little lines—and then tap on "Traffic."

That is exactly it.
Now, there is one thing I still cannot wrap my head around—how on earth are they actually pulling this data?
I heard a rumor that these traffic updates are actually reflecting the conditions from the previous day.
If that is actually how it works, then the whole system is fundamentally flawed—and here is my reasoning.
For instance, I was planning a drive from Monterey to San Francisco, and Google shows me yesterday’s report—which was perfectly clear—so I head out today only to find myself stuck in a complete nightmare with a massive line stretching 19 miles

That sounds exactly like something Google would pull off. But how does Alibaba actually know what the traffic is like? I always assumed there was some kind of radio service where sensors just broadcast the data.

I can't speak for Garmin, but a quick Google search suggests they actually rely on some kind of radio systems to handle that.

I am a bit confused about how they are supposedly tracking phones—not every single device has GPS enabled, after all.

Location isn't just determined by GPS; you also have to factor in the distance from the base stations within the game mechanics
