Hello everyone,
I was wondering if anyone might know of any specific tests used to evaluate memory function...
To provide some context, I am twenty-seven years old, and I have begun to suspect that I might be experiencing some issues regarding my memory—specifically my short-term recall. It seems that I frequently find myself unable to retain information that I was introduced to only moments before...
My boyfriend has actually pointed this out to me on several occasions, suggesting that I am not truly listening to him, as there are times when I will ask him the same question multiple times, or perhaps become frustrated because I thought he hadn't mentioned something, only for him to insist that he did...
Furthermore, in social settings when I am meeting new people, I often find that after merely thirty minutes have passed, I can no longer recall the name of the person I was just conversing with...
And yet another recent instance occurred while I was reading a crime novel, where suddenly, in the middle of the story, I found myself completely unable to remember the protagonist's name, even though I was already halfway through the book... and so it goes. As far as my long-term memory is concerned, I do not believe I have any significant issues there, for example, when watching various game shows, my ability to recall answers remains quite high...
But this short-term lapses are what truly trouble me. At this stage, I haven't encountered any major issues in my professional life, as I always complete my tasks or follow whatever instructions my manager provides (though I do make sure to write everything down immediately, which perhaps prevents problems, or maybe I simply fail to execute them, who knows, I suppose issues would arise there too)...
So, I was thinking, should I attempt some sort of self-assessment or testing to determine if these concerns are legitimate or if I am merely overthinking things?...
And if I were to seek professional guidance, who would be the appropriate medical specialist to consult...
It is also worth mentioning, as I feel it may be a relevant factor, that until about a month ago, I had been following a vegan diet, and my B12 levels were at a critically low threshold. Having read that a deficiency in B12 can lead to cognitive and memory struggles, I became rather anxious and have started incorporating fish into my diet. So far, over the last month, I have managed to eat it twice (it is difficult for me to force myself to eat more, given that I have been a vegetarian since I was fourteen and transitioned to being vegan at twenty)... and I have also started taking B12 supplements daily...
Thank you all for your help,
s.
