Microsoft Word help!?

So, here’s the headache I'm dealing with: I'm currently working on a schedule in Microsoft Word, specifically setting up a timetable. When I'm typing out the sequence for the hours—say, I type "1." and then move my mouse away to get that little blinking cursor 😉—the software decides to be "helpful" and automatically converts that "1." into a date like "09/01/14." It keeps doing this with every single number I try to enter. :/

Does anyone know if there's a way to just kill this feature entirely?

If it only triggers when you add a period, just right-click the table and uncheck "Optical Character Recognition" (it's the third option from the bottom).
