'Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol' is the official title for the fourth installment—set to hit US theaters on December 16, 2011.

The cast has touched down in Dubai to kick off production... they're even announcing that some sequences will take place atop the world's tallest skyscraper, the Burj Khalifa. We can also expect filming locations in Moscow, Prague, and Vancouver.

The director steering this fourth action blockbuster is Brad Bird, the talent behind hits like "Pixar," "Ratatouille," and "The Incredibles."

Tom's ensemble features Jeremy Renner, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Paul Patton, Vladimir Mashkov, Michael Nyqvist, and the main antagonist, Léa Seydoux.

Tom Cruise returns as super-spy Ethan Hunt in "Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol." Paramount Pictures has announced that it is making "Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol." The film, which will be produced by Tom Cruise, J. J. Abrams and Bad Robot Productions and will star Cruise. Screenwriters Josh Applebaum and Andra Nemec are attached to write the script, from an original idea by Cruise and Abrams. Abrams’s last project with Paramount was "Star Trek," which he produced and directed. The film grossed $385 million globally. Cruise's "Mission Impossible" franchise has grossed over 1.4 billion globally. "Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol" will be co-financed by David Ellison's Skydance Productions.

This is an incredibly unexpected choice for a director. Brad Bird has consistently proven himself to be an intelligent and subtle filmmaker when handling commercial animation—Ratatouille is arguably the finest 3D animated film I’ve ever seen, and even his earlier work on The Iron Giant holds up remarkably well. That said, I honestly have no idea what his take on MI might look like.

On a broader note, I feel the entire franchise hasn't quite found its footing since dePalmin's brilliant original entry. Woo leaned far too heavily into stylization, which felt completely out of place for this kind of story, and Abrams simply isn't in the same league as a director; he is, first and foremost, a producer at heart...

Hmm, hmm, hmm... honestly, I’d probably be shouting 😲 "WHY, OH GODS ABOVE, WHY!?" but the trailer actually looks pretty interesting 🙂 and since Bird is directing, I truly believe catching this in a theater will be worth the trip 🙂 (unlike MI2 😂)

Looks interesting. Personally, I thought the third one was a total mess, whereas the second one was actually decent enough to watch.
As for me, let them keep making sequels as long as there’s an audience interested and they have material to work with.

Personally, I feel like Woo totally butchered the second installment with his specific directing style. Sure, that vibe works for a hard-boiled target, a man without a face, or those Hong Kong classics starring Chow Yun Fat, but it just doesn't fit the Mission: Impossible vibe.

Looking back on it, the first movie captured the spirit of the original series perfectly. The second one completely missed the mark because of that "Woo" style, whereas the third movie might actually be my favorite of the bunch.

For me, the second one is just plain awful. The first one is way better, though I have to agree that the third is the strongest. Based on what I saw in the trailer, the fourth looks like it actually has some potential...

Renner is cool, but Cruise is on a whole other level if you can look past all that Scientology nonsense surrounding him. This movie looks like it’s gonna crush it. I'm feeling pretty nostalgic now; might have to go back and rewatch the old ones before the sequel drops. It's been a few years, and seeing that trailer just gave me major flashbacks to scenes in 🙂...

The trailer looks solid, but let's not get ahead of ourselves regarding the actual film. I'm crossing my fingers for more actual teamwork on screen. It honestly bugs me when Tom takes center stage and handles most of the heavy lifting; the original series was brilliant specifically because no one person was doing everything themselves.

Honestly, it's hard to believe the insurance company even cleared him to attempt it.

Abrams: Seeing it in IMAX is terrifying. What he pulled off is genuinely unbelievable. It feels surreal to sit in meetings with him and just think, 'That guy was scaling the outside of a skyscraper.' I'm sitting there, he's in my office, and I'm thinking about what he actually did. It’s like talking to Buzz Aldrin. It’s like, 'That guy was actually on the moon!'

Last time I caught a trailer in IMAX, it was for Ghost Protocol. Those shots of the Burj Khalifa looked massive—it seriously felt like I was approaching the thing via helicopter.😁
From what I can tell, Ghost Protocol was shot using IMAX cameras, just like TDK.
