Movie Week

image

So, this thread is kind of a cousin to the Movie Day thread, but it’s actually pretty different, and since I noticed a good chunk of you guys were asking about it, I figured I’d just go ahead and get it started.

The distinction here is actually pretty huge, okay? See, the whole idea behind Movie Day is basically to save some forum space and give everyone a quick way to blow off steam. If someone wants to jump in and chat about some random old Bud Spencer flick, they don't have to start a whole new thread; they just hit up Movie Day and boom—you get your fix within 24 hours.
Now, Movie Week isn't that fast-paced or snappy like Movie Day, but it still helps keep the forum organized while giving us all a chance to actually coordinate which movie we’re watching on a specific day, and even better, we can hang out and talk about it afterward, which you just can't really do with the Movie Day setup. That’s the big difference right there.

The name pretty much speaks for itself, doesn't it? Basically—you just drop the title of the movie you want to be the featured pick for the week, and for the next seven days, that’s what we’ll be talking about. It’s as simple as that.
Now, to make sure this doesn't turn into total chaos, we need a few ground rules to keep things running smoothly. This whole thing officially kicks off tonight at midnight (which would be 12:00 AM on 11/11/2010), and whoever posts the movie tonight gets us through the next seven days—meaning until next Friday. We'll keep that cycle going every Friday at midnight (just to be clear, that's Thursday night turning into Friday morning) until the next Friday rolls around.
Also, I don't think it’s fair if the same person keeps grabbing the spotlight every single week, you know? So, I think a fair rule would be that once you pick the Movie of the Week, you’ve gotta wait 30 days before you can suggest another one. That way, we don't end up with one person being the "fastest trigger finger" who always snags the spot; you post once, wait a month, and then you can jump back in once everyone else has had their fair shot.

A few suggestions—on the Movie Week thread, we can actually coordinate so that if most of us haven't seen the chosen film, we watch it together and then dive into a big discussion afterward. We could even try to schedule a time to watch it all at once! It's all about working together. Also, a great idea—and I have to give a shout-out to Amata for thinking of this—is that if someone picks a movie that almost nobody has seen, let's give everyone a 2-3 day grace period to actually watch it before we start the heavy discussion. I mean, two or three days should be plenty of time to download a movie and find a moment to sit down and watch it, right?
I'm totally open to more ideas if you guys want to help make this thread even better.

-

Like I mentioned above, but just to lay it all out clearly, here are the rules:

- Just post the title of the movie you want to be our Movie of the Week.
- The new movie gets posted every Friday at 00:00 (so, technically late Thursday night).
- Once you've picked a movie, you're sidelined for 30 days before you can pick again.
- If the movie is something most people haven't seen, we wait 2-3 days for everyone to catch up before starting the discussion.
- In the event that multiple people try to post the movie at the exact same time, the person whose post hits the server first is the winner, and their choice is the official movie for the week.

I’m not really feeling these rules

If there turns out to be enough interest—I’m thinking at least 20 active members, which I honestly think we're pretty close to hitting—we should probably implement a rule where if you’ve already picked the movie week once, you can't post again for the rest of that month.

That feels much more realistic to me; right now, being able to post every other week just seems a bit silly—everyone deserves a fair shot to get their candidate into the conversation.

Also, it would be great if we could set a specific window for actually watching the film. For instance, if someone picks a movie most of us haven't seen yet, we need a reasonable deadline—say, 3 days—which I think is plenty of time to squeeze in a movie before the discussion kicks off on day 4.

That said, I definitely welcome anyone who might have a different take or a different perspective on these suggestions to speak up.

Come on guys, give it a rest! First you all jump in and tear a thread apart, then the guy actually puts in the work to start a fresh one, and suddenly you're already complaining again.

☕Nobody is stopping you from starting your own thread with your own set of rules. Just show a little respect and follow the guidelines already...

Jeffrey Fisher61 said:I don't really agree with the rules as they stand

If we see enough interest in this topic—say at least 20 active members, which I honestly think we can hit— then we should probably have a rule where if you nominate a movie week once, you can't nominate another one for the rest of the month.

That feels way more fair, right? Because otherwise, someone could just post every other week, and that’s kind of silly; we need to make sure everyone gets a fair shot at bringing their pick into the conversation.

Also, it would be awesome if we set a specific window for actually watching the movie. Like, if someone picks a flick most of us haven't seen yet, we should have a realistic deadline—maybe three days? I feel like three days is plenty of time for people to squeeze in a movie, and then on the fourth day, the big discussion kicks off.

And hey, I totally welcome anyone who might have a different take or a different perspective on these suggestions to speak up!

You've got a point there, so you're right, I'm gonna change my mind on that. 👍

I'm on board with the three-day idea too, but honestly, let's just hash those details out within the thread itself instead of trying to bake them into the official rules right away. We can just suggest things like, "Hey guys, let's all watch this over the next two days so we can spend five days talking about it," and go from there.

I definitely agree that everyone needs to chime in so we can make this thread better, but let's just ease into it, okay? Once we get a rhythm going, I can easily reach out to the moderator to tweak any rules we end up deciding on together, you feel me? 😉

My bad—I didn't realize I didn't have voting rights on this forum here.

I was simply offering a suggestion—goodness knows I wasn't trying to insult anyone.

Is it just me, or has everyone on this board been acting a bit overly aggressive lately?

edit: I get what you're saying, cosmiclynx57.

I was just tossing out a suggestion! Good grief, I wasn't attacking anyone.

Is it just me, or have people here been getting way too aggressive lately?

edit: I get you, cosmiclynx57.

😉
Look, I want to apologize for my own outburst. I let my emotions get the better of me for a second there...👍

bluebadger14 & Amata, chill out everyone, everything is totally fine. 😉

Amata actually came up with a killer suggestion—that whoever posts a movie shouldn't be allowed to set a 30-day lockout (I originally said 7 days, my bad!) just so someone else can get a turn, so I went ahead and changed that right away.

Look, just because I'm the one who started this thread doesn't mean I think I'm some kind of big shot or the boss of this whole thing, okay? I didn't start this just to hog the spotlight; I did it so we could all hang out and talk, which means everyone gets a say, and if we all decide the rules need an update—even if we've been running things since 2013—then we change them! 👍

Honestly, what is the logic in waiting until midnight just to drop the first movie? 😕

NHF

Honestly, the timing doesn't really matter—whether it's midnight or 7 in the morning—I think cosmiclynx57 was just trying to give everyone a heads-up so they wouldn't miss this thread.

goldenhound32 said:I mean, seriously, why on earth would we wait until midnight just to kick off the first movie? 😕

Man, total classic, right? Haha! I knew it—it’s like if I say, "Hey, let's just dive in right now at 5:00 PM," someone's gonna be like, "Well, why not wait until 8:00 PM or 10:00 PM then?" 😂
Back when we were talking about movie day, people were asking, "Why start at 5:00 AM instead of noon?" 🤣

Look, we gotta start eventually, right? Does the specific hour really matter that much?
The reason I set it for midnight was just so people would actually notice this thread exists in the first place.

Plus, I wanted to be fair to everyone. By midnight, more folks will have seen the thread and actually have a chance to pick the first movie. If we had jumped the gun at 5:00 PM, it would’ve just been us five or whoever happens to be lurking here right now who could've started it. I figured it’s better to give as many people as possible a shot at picking the first movie of the week, you know? It just feels fairer so nobody can complain that we rushed into it without waiting a few hours. Besides, what's the rush, right? We aren't exactly racing against a clock here.

I actually brought this up in my intro post too! I thought it was such a solid idea and a perfect rule to have: if the majority of us (or even the whole group) hasn't seen a certain movie, let's pick something new so we can all watch it together before we dive into the comments.

Man, you hit the nail on the head with that suggestion, and I totally gave you props for it in my opening post 👍 just check down at the bottom and you'll see 😉

To be honest, I find the idea of someone suggesting a film that most people haven't even seen much more appealing. I actually had a similar thought quite some time ago, but 🙂bluebadger14
beat me to it.
Besides, who on earth schedules a movie for midnight?

I’m all for it—it feels like a solid, well-fleshed-out idea now. As for the actual movies, I think it just comes down to whoever strikes gold first and posts it here.

I think I’ll probably skip a few days until I stumble upon a discussion that actually has some meat on its bones—something that hasn't been recycled a hundred times already. After all, like goldenhound32 mentioned, it would be awesome if we focused on films that aren't being talked about everywhere you look.

Though, it would definitely be a bummer if someone suggested some obscure indie flick from 1983 that is basically impossible to find online.

We need something watchable and accessible, yet still a bit under the radar—not just the same mainstream stuff that's constantly shoved in our faces.

Anyway, I just totally butchered my own point there. 😬

So, is this basically like a book club? If it is, count me in 👋

Like... everyone drops a movie suggestion, then we vote on what to watch for the following movie week, and then we just hang out and talk about it afterward..

I'm down. Someone drops five picks on day one, we pick one within 24 hours, watch it over the next three days, and then spend the following three days debating it.

...and maybe someone wins a prize at the end, lol. 😁😂😂🤣

This is a great idea. When just one person picks, we're stuck with whatever they choose. This way, most people get a vote. It'll probably lead to choosing something good, fun, and easy to find.

I actually think that’s a pretty solid idea—though honestly, the current setup works fine too, since limiting it to one movie selection per month ensures everyone eventually gets their turn at the wheel.

How were you thinking of handling the voting process? Would it be restricted to just the active participants, or should we open it up to the entire forum via a poll?

Also, I have one more quick question—to keep things organized, are we going to start a fresh thread for each occasion, or are we planning to keep everything bundled into one single mega-thread?

Sweet, looks like there are some of us actually on board with this idea.. 🙂

I’d say we just set up a system where everyone drops one suggestion or movie of their choice, and then we all vote... instead of having one person dump five movies on us and leaving the rest of us to pick from them ?

I'd just suggest a system where everyone submits one single pick, then we all vote. It's better than having one person dump five movies on everyone else to choose from ?

Exactly. At midnight, the first five suggestions go to a vote, and the voting lasts for a set amount of time.
It adds a bit of competition since a ton of people will want to get their suggestion in right at midnight, but only the first five accepted by the thread move to the vote. And yeah, one suggestion per person.

I'm totally down for that. It'll keep the list way more varied since we've all got such different tastes... would be nice to avoid getting stuck watching five depressing indie dramas in a row😁
