Need help with a PC build

I'm dealing with an old setup here, and the whole thing is crawling at a snail's pace constantly. I could really use some help getting this moving again. Here’s what I'm working with:

Asrock Prescott 800 dual channel 775V88+

Intel Celeron D 3.06GHz
1GB RAM and some random Smartbox power supply, model SMB-400
A buddy of mine thinks one of the components might be dying on me. If anyone has any ideas on how to fix this, thanks.

That machine is pretty old, so honestly, you'd be better off picking up something more recent. But if it used to run smoothly and now it's just dragging, you might want to run a disk check first to see if the hard drive is actually failing. If the drive itself is healthy, then try reinstalling the operating system. It’s likely just cluttered with junk files, or at the very least, you should try running some software cleanup tools to clear out the digital clutter.

That Celeron was pretty garbage even when it was brand new, so I guess it’s even worse now that it’s basically ancient history 😁 At least dual-core processors are the bare minimum if you want anything to run smoothly.

Also, 1GB of RAM just isn't cutting it anymore; modern apps eat up way too much memory (even just a browser or basic websites).

Since that motherboard won't support any dual-core CPUs, upgrading probably doesn't make much sense.

You could check the hard drive like they suggested, or maybe just roll back to something like Windows XP or a lightweight Linux build to squeeze a bit more life out of it, but eventually, you're probably gonna need to buy something newer anyway.

I'm running Windows XP here, but I was wondering if the parts are actually "compatible" enough for me to try swapping in an Intel Pentium 4?

You aren't going to strike gold here, but you might want to give this a shot since it's practically dirt cheap:

Maybe grab the 2x1GB set? You could probably talk them down a bit since you're taking both (maybe $80-$30).

Also, if you want one of those beefier P4 chips, I guess it's usually better to hunt for old processors on eBay:

Those P4 builds are bottom-of-the-barrel stuff. Even on Craigslist, you won't find them going for much, $33, especially when you factor in the cost of the memory $67

I honestly don't get why it's dragging this much or freezing up like that. I used to have an old rig with just 512MB of RAM and an Athlon 1.8GHz, and man, that thing felt snappy, like it was brand new yesterday.

Surfing in 2010 versus surfing in 2016 are two completely different worlds. A single-core processor and just 1GB of RAM have been insufficient—honestly, they've been a total struggle for quite some time now.

Look, I don't really get it, since they both use the 775 socket....With AMD, you had AM2, AM2+, and then AM3 and AM3+, where you could almost mix and match everything however you wanted.... Just the other day, I popped a processor into an AM2+ motherboard that the board didn't even recognize, but it still worked. I got the system running without any issues at all.... The motherboard had no clue which CPU was actually installed, but by default, the clock speeds were set correctly...
