Need help with Handbrake?

I'm looking for a program that can convert a movie into an AVI file while permanently burning in the subtitles.
A colleague of mine suggested that Handbrake is the best tool for the job.
I went ahead and downloaded it, but I have to say, it feels a bit overly complicated—I was wondering if there might be some kind of tutorial out there available in English?

Once you launch Handbrake, navigate to the sidebar where you'll find the video section—select the "all to avi" option, click "add file," and pick out the movie you want to convert. After that, just hit OK, click "start" at the top of the window, and wait for the conversion process to finish.
