I am asking for urgent assistance regarding my boyfriend; I am at a complete loss because his pain levels have become unbearable. 😒((
Years ago, he had a tooth extracted, but they apparently only removed the crown and left the roots embedded in the jaw. He was unaware of this until a recent infection flared up right in that spot. His face swelled up significantly. After he took photos of the swelling, the doctors confirmed those leftover roots were the issue and insisted they be surgically removed. He was prescribed Augmentin, which managed to clear the initial inflammation. However, work was absolute chaos at the time, so he simply couldn't find a window to get the surgery done.
He works for a travel agency where he’s constantly battling temperature shiftsβ€”he’s stuck under blasting AC all day, then has to step outside to assist tourists, swinging from 77 degrees indoors to 95 degrees outside.
Recently, he started complaining about body aches, specifically in his lower back. Within two days, he developed a high fever accompanied by a sore throat, headaches, and intense muscle aches. It was a textbook case of the flu.
I immediately stocked up on Advil, Tylenol, Strepsils, and various Vitamin C supplements. He tried to eat normally by increasing his fruit and vegetable intake, but it was just a standard bout of the flu.
He was shivering violently with chills before the fever actually spiked, and he was sweating so much I was constantly changing his clothes. He was extremely disciplined about taking every dose of his medication on schedule.
Then, the throat pain escalated to a point where he could swallow nothing except chocolate pudding. He literally cannot swallow solid food. To make matters worse, that gum inflammation returned over the last few days, but this time it has spread to encompass his entire mouth and throat area.
He can't even take a sip of water without excruciating pain, and he isn't eating anything at all. I am deeply concerned. He has survived on nothing but yogurt for several days now.
I bought him some Propolis drops, but they did nothing. I tried various mouthwashes, which also failed. He’s taking Vitamin C, and I even read somewhere that a 3% hydrogen peroxide rinse might help, but he tried that too, and there has been zero improvement.
As soon as he was able to walk without feeling dizzy, we rushed him to see a physician. Since it's vacation season, most local clinics and dentists are closed, so we had to head straight to the Emergency Room.
The doctor prescribed Doxycycline. I find it completely irrational; he explicitly told her he couldn't eat or swallow anything, yet she handed him such a potent antibiotic that absolutely requires food to prevent stomach distress. He took it on an empty stomach and ended up vomiting violently. It was horrific.
This morning, we finally tracked down an on-call dentist. He prescribed Augmentin again, noting that both of his lower wisdom teeth are coming in alongside those old roots, and insisted that once the inflammation subsides, the roots must be extracted.
He has already taken two doses of the Augmentin. I realize antibiotics aren't an instant fix, but his condition remains unchanged. And he still isn't eating. 😒
Furthermore, he is now complaining of intense ear pain, so I put some olive oil in his ear to try and soothe it.
Does anyone know what I should do? Will this pass? What exactly is happening to him, and what can I possibly give him to eat when he refuses everything? Please help. 😒

Doxycycline is notoriously brutal on the stomach; taking it on an empty stomach is basically just masochism at this point. Honestly, what did this to your boyfriend was exactly what you described: that untreated dental infection combined with those constant, sudden fever spikes. He needs to stay hydrated, plain and simple. If he can't keep food down, don't force it. You can't fight biology by sheer willpower. We just have to wait for the inflammation to subside. He should start feeling better in a couple of days. But seriously, get those roots pulled as soon as humanly possible. In a worst-case scenario, you're looking at serious secondary infections hitting vital organs like the heart or kidneys.

Hope you feel better soon. Maybe try some over-the-counter ear drops if it’s still bothering you.

Not a single bit of progress to report today either... It’s absolutely devastating. He’s just lying there, unable to eat anything, and even struggling just to swallow water... 😒(

Maybe he should try some Bioactive? They have those little liquid shots, either with fruit or plain. I’m thinking about it because he’s taking antibiotics but barely eating anything.
I really hope those antibiotics kick in and he starts feeling better soon!

I’ve been buying this bio-active supplement every single day...
I truly hope those antibiotics kick in as soon as possible. To be honest, I have a strong feeling it might take them a bit longer to work this time around, simply because the infection was quite severe and seems to have spread everywhere. 😠

Maybe you'll need another round of antibioticsβ€”though, obviously, that’s up to your doctor or dentist.
I went through something similar myself. I was cycled through Augmentin, then Cipro, then Doxycycline. The pain was just brutal, and the infection dragged on forever, so you end up needing painkillers on top of everything else.
It'll get better. As long as a professional is keeping an eye on things, you should be fine.

Not much to say here, honestly. You just really need to let an oral surgeon go in there and do a complete overhaul of everything in your mouth. We’ve actually dealt with a few cases involving peritonsillar abscesses that spiraled into full-blown right-sided pleural effusion, all because someone ignored a nasty tooth infection.
Trust me on this one, those situations get incredibly ugly, and it’s stuff you absolutely want to avoid at all costs!
