Network folder sharing help

Hey everyone,

I’m trying to move files between my laptop and my desktop. The laptop is on Wi-Fi, while the desktop is hardwired via Ethernet. I’ve already set them up in a Workgroup, but whenever I try to share a folder, I just get an access denied error. Check the screenshots here:

The exact same thing happens when I try to reach the desktop from the laptop side.
As you can see, both machines show up fine on the network map.

That's exactly how I set up my laptop and desktop too. Sometimes it works seamlessly, and other times? Not so much. It turns out the culprit was just a pesky firewall setting.

Disabled the firewalls on both machines. Still nothing.

Are you running a saved login on the computer you're using to share from?

First, you need to figure out exactly what you're sharing:

Then, adjust your permissions settings:

If you aren't constantly battling connectivity issues, honestly, sticking with cloud storage is a much smoother way to go. Everything just syncs up automatically across every single computer where you have those folders shared... it saves so much headache.

Look, I get all that. But it isn't working. I have absolutely no clue what's wrong because this used to be seamless before.

I don't see why that's necessary.

Anyway, I set it up and it's working now. The downside is that whenever I try to access a shared folder, I have to manually enter the credentials from the host PC.

It’s just a security thing, honestly. I’m pretty sure you can disable it if you’re willing to mess around in the registry... maybe try a quick Google search to find the way

Back in the day with older versions of Windows, you wouldn't have been bothered by such trivialities, but modern operating systems have become far too "(pre)smart" for their own good; they essentially try to think on your behalf, assuming you desire a certain level of security protocols when, in your specific case, you certainly didn't ask for them—they simply ended up making your life more complicated. It’s a remarkably common occurrence.
