Hey everyone

It’s been seven years since I bought my PC and now the damn thing is finally dying on me. My graphics card kicked the bucket so I switched to integrated graphics, then the network port crapped out on me and wouldn't connect to the web, so I had to buy some kind of USB Wi-Fi dongle or whatever just to get online. Anyway, I won't ramble. I need a new rig. I've still got this Dell UltraSharp 19-inch TFT LCD 4:3 monitor—listen, this thing has been running since 2007 and it's survived more abuse than any piece of junk I've ever seen🙂. If you think I don't need a new monitor, I'm willing to drop $650 on the tower itself. I don't need peripherals. But if you guys think the monitor needs replacing too, I can go up to $2500. I'll be buying from Micro Center on a 24-month installment plan, so I'm looking at that higher price point.
Ideally, I want a 250GB SSD for the OS and a 2TB Blue HDD, plus toss in a DVD drive. I'd prefer an AMD GPU and processor, and maybe an aftermarket CPU cooler
. I was thinking about something like this for the case

or maybe this one

You guys decide what's best. Thanks in advance

That monitor is actually a solid replacement for

Regarding the cases, this one is definitely the smarter buy. You get three 120mm fans included for free, whereas with the CM option, you only get one and'll end up spending more just to get decent airflow. That third case isn't even available right now, and honestly, those Commander models are pretty low quality. If you’re really set on the CM one, go for it—it’s not a terrible deal if you personally prefer the look

Anyway,

That third price is what's sitting in the cart

Now, for a decent first monitor, you're about $67 short click. Your best bet is to either sell off some of the gear you currently have or just wait a bit longer to buy it later

It’s an EVGA GeForce GTX, 4 GB DDR5, 256-bit, running at 970/5700 MHz.
Intel Core i7 processor (16MB Cache, up to 4.20 GHz), sAM3+ socket.
ASUS Motherboard, sAM3+
It's a Fortron 550W Raider (RA550) power supply. It features a 12cm fan, Active PFC, 88% efficiency, and comes with six connectors. I guess it does the job.
It’s a Zalman Z1 mid tower. Dimensions are roughly 199mm wide by 432mm high and 457mm deep. It supports Standard ATX or Micro ATX motherboards, and the PSU standard is... [incomplete]
SCYTHE Tatsumi, SCTTM-1000B
Samsung 850 evo 250GB, SATA3, MZ-75E250B
It’s a 1TB Seagate Barracuda, 3.5", 7200RPM, with 64MB Cache and a SATA3 interface (ST1000DM003). I guess it's just your standard hard drive.
Crucial DDR3 8GB (single stick), 1600MHz CL11, PC3-12800, CT102464BA160B.

Total: 6$208 At 24 fps (excluding the roaster), I guess.

It’s cutting it a bit close on the budget. Maybe you should grab a 120GB SSD instead? Also, I guess you'll need to pick up a monitor too—just try to find the cheapest one that isn't a TN panel, if possible.

I guess this looks like an interesting find. It seems to be a decent option for what it is, though I'm not entirely sure if it fits everyone's specific needs. Maybe worth a look if you're shopping around.

I guess you could always just sell off your old parts to cover the cost... maybe.

or which one makes more sense here?

Oh, I forgot to mention—this is going outside my budget. My old HDDs are still fine and I’ll just keep them as extra storage, so I don't have anything from my old rig to sell off. I'm definitely getting a monitor too. Between the PC and the screen, I'm looking at maybe $50 a month. If this thing actually lasts me seven years like my old one did, then whatever. I'll probably check what's available after work tomorrow and then finally make a call.
Thanks for now

Are the drives SATA?

Can't decide between an optical drive or an external one? Why not just install them directly in the rig?

So you're torn between an external enclosure or just keeping them in a tray? I mean, why not just slap them straight into the PC
?

Honestly, I’d rather have them outside the case. I don't know, maybe they wouldn't even want me putting old HDDs into a brand-new build anyway—I can't even remember how many of them I have left, and besides, they're basically just extra storage at this point.

Just toss them in the case. No point buying extra gear unless you actually need them to be portable in an external enclosure. If it's just for storage, who cares?
And that other thing is just designed to fill up a 5.25" bay. Total waste of money when any standard case has plenty of room for a few hard drives.
